Passengers can bring guns on Amtrak starting in December

Well it's not exactly allowing concealed carry, but it's a step in the right direction..
What's up with the 24 hour notice.. That is not a requirement at airports??

It allows them time to make sure that there will be the ability to house the gun. Amtrak at this time of year has a severe shortage of equipment and would need to make sure the car would be able to handle it. Try finding a southbound room on Autotrain right now. Same thing will occure northbound in March.

Unless they have improved their service ten fold it is still dark ages transport. But it is good to see they are making accommodations for gun transport. Now if they can just ensure your weapon will not be obsolete by the time you finally arrive........:jester:

The one time I used Amtrack I almost expected to see Fred Flintstone riding the train I was on. Amtrack is that much of a dinosaur, IMHO.

With that said, it is good to see that you can now transport firearms when traveling via Amtrack.

If you've never ridden in the last car of the train going down the NE Corridor at 115 NPH you've missed all the fun.

last time i took it, i went down to SIU from chicago.. on the way back, i guess i was talking to the right person who knew the conductors... we were in the back car with the door open... door was open cause we needed a way to get the smoke out lol

Since refusing to fly anymore on commercial flights, I have taken AmTrak several times. I attended the 9/12 rally in D.C. in 2009, and took AmTrak round-trip from Central Florida. Although it took a little more time than a jet (DUH!), I got to sleep, walk around, got several HOT meals, socialized with the other pax, and even had some scenery to look at. I looked at it like an adventure.

And I never once went through a metal detector, had to remove my shoes and belt, got 'wanded' or frisked, or had to look at a full-body scanner. My bags weren't searched, I wasn't even asked if I had any box cutters or PETN on my person. And I liked that.

BUT - our wonderful Gestap...er...Homeland Security and its bastard child the TSA are making plans to fix that little loophole. Soon, you'll have to strip to your skivvies to get on board a Greyhound bus or AmTrak. Soon, we'll have the storm troopers on every mode of transport, making sure that granny will not be able to set her panties ablaze and destroy the Silver Meteor.

We're losing it, guys. We're losing the freedoms that our Founders fought and died for, and the scary thing is that we have handed those freedoms to the socialists and communists that are raping this country and forcing it into the new world order.

My point exactly...What Amtrak calls "High speed" trains are limited in distribution and speed. Go to Europe if you want to see good trains..then come back and ride Amtrak again. You mentioned 115 MPH?? The Local SNCF trains in France go that fast..the the TGV goes 180+...and you can go nationwide.

Too true...recently in my state (Oregon) we had an attempted bombing foiled by the FBI...to my surprise and shock the suspect was a Muslim male between the ages of 18 and 34. I guess profiling isn't such a good idea after all huh?? Imagine how much that would speed up security checks.

You have to remember that those speed are reached only on dedicated passenger rights of way that are very straight. Back in the days before Amtrak and the Feds being involved, passenger trains in the US ran at speeds of 90 MPH or more in many parts of the US. I agree, we do need fixed plant high speed rail. It was something I voted to have put in the Florida Constitution. The Acela trainsets in the NEC can run at up to 150 MPH. That is the minimum we wanted down here.

The car I was riding in on the last run thru the NEC was a privately owned car built in 1937 and was the oldest all stainless car that can meet Amtrak rules. It is one of the oldest all stainless cars built by the Budd company. When in use by the Santa Fe it ran at those speeds when new. As for the need to go to Europe, no. For three months I saw the Bullet Trains ( SHINKANSEN ) atleast twice a day when they were just over a year and a quarter old.

Other than our homegrown variety, they have all been males, Muslim, and between 18 and 40. Sounds like an easy profiling job to me.
