Park ranger death blamed on 2010 law allowing weapons in parks

The gunman got what he deserved in the end. Now politicians will use this incident to remove RTBA from war vets with PTSD. And remove the RTBA in parks from law abiding citizens. Somehow I think he would have taken his firearms in the park weather it was legal or not. Again this terrible loss of life is tragic. However I don't believe that a law against firearms in parks would have changed the outcome at all...

"The shooting renewed debate about a federal law that made it legal for people to take loaded weapons into Mount Rainier. The 2010 law made possession of firearms in national parks subject to state gun laws.

Bill Wade, the outgoing chair of the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees, said Congress should be regretting its decision to allow loaded weapons in national parks.

He called Sunday's fatal shooting a tragedy that could have been prevented. He hopes Congress will reconsider the law that took effect in early 2010, but doubts that will happen in today's political climate".

Let's see - it's against the law to murder someone. If the law was reverted to preclude guns in national parks then this person who ignored a more significant law (the law of man and God) then he would have obeyed the prohibition. Just another mindless stretch to attempt to make an anti-gun point.

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid... The criminals, unstable, and such do NOT give a squirt about such restrictions. No matter if it were a park or a business or a public place.

I simply will not visit or pay to support such parks if they restrict my right there. I guess I try sending an educational letter to this 'Bill Wade' character.

As is true in all cases, unless exhaustive vehicle searches are going to be instituted before entering parks, a law outlawing firearms carry in parks isn't going to prevent anyone from bringing them in. It's like the gun free school zones act, which was initially instituted largely in response to the shooting at Columbine and ignored the fact that the shooters violated more than 20 existing laws in order to carry out their plans. Stacking law on top of law isn't going to prevent anything, any more than completely disarming citizens is going to keep outlaws from getting their hands on firearms (as was clearly demonstrated in Norway).

Yeah I was wondering cuz it's not on any local News.Coulda missed though but thats all I did today. Football and news. Doesn't make sense. You can't carry weapons in the park. Only CCW

Do they honestly think this guy would have obeyed that law?

Politicians do not see any difference between a law abiding citizen and a criminal all they see is someone with access to power that was not granted to us by them. And they can't stand it.

So the reasoning of the columnist goes something like this: "the guy committed murder, but if there had been a prohibition on firearms in the national park, he would have obeyed the prohibition and not committed murder".

As Homer Simpson would say, "Doh!".

Violent criminals or violent mental cases just don't obey laws -- ANY laws!

Problem #2 in this incident was the visitors trapped in the Park building for some time. We've seen nothing about any of them being armed and officials were initially greatly concerned for their safety. Reverting back to "NO Guns in Parks" would just insure that all future potential victims would be unable to defend themselves against deadly attack.

The "Carry in Parks" law was passed precisely BECAUSE good people were defensless against being violently attacked by criminals IN PARKS. The law gives the prospective victim a CHANCE, JUST a chance, to not be a victim. Sometimes, sadly, that chance is not enough. Not even for trained Law Enforcement Officers.

RIP Ranger Anderson.

guns dont kill people, crazy sons of bitches do

This particular "crazy son of *****" served his country by taking multiple tours in Iraq.

He didn't fail his country, his country failed him. Too many that served are coming back and not getting the medical and psychiatric attention they need and deserve and have earned.

Yes, he may have snapped and is responsible for the atrocities he committed but who is responsible for breaking his mind in the first place.

He was found half naked frozen to death, in a ditch. We will never know what happened to his mind. Fortunately for the authorities he will never be able to tell his truth.

You have a point here...It is sad...my husband's sister was married to a guy with the same ailment. He ended up committed suicide.
