OWB Sweat guard, Pros/Cons

Hello all,

New to the forums. I have been a CCW for 8 years now and have always used and IWB holster. Currently I am carrying a Glock 23 gen 4. I am now looking at getting a Raven Concealment Phantom OWB holster (or similar brand). My question is what are the Pros and Cons of having a sweat guard or not having one. I understand about keeping sweat off the gun but like I said this will be for OWB and I will be wearing a t-shirt underneath it. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you

I have the Raven Concealment Phantom Light Compatible Holster for my Glock 19 with a Streamlight TLR-1. I got the full sweat guard so I can use it without a shirt underneath. Also, the sweat guard prevents, to a certain extent, a shirt worn underneath from getting in the holster while the gun is out, making reholstering easier. I don't see any upside in not getting the sweat guard.

Thank you for the reply. I went ahead and ordered my Raven Concealment Phantom with sweat guard tonight. The more I read and thought about it getting the guard makes sense. Just out of curiosity, do you use the Raven for CCW? If so how is it working out for you?
Thanks again.

I bought the Phantom Light Compatible Holster for my Glock 19 with a Streamlight TLR-1 for the bump in the night situation. The Glock 19 with the Streamlight TLR-1 is my first go-to firearm at night. If there is time, I get my pants on and holster the weapon. If there is still time, I get my shirt on and only tuck it between the sweat guard and the body for open carry at home. Then I go for my primary home defense firearm, a Mossberg 930, if the need arises. If there is an emergency that requires me to leave my home, I untuck my shirt, conceal the firearm and grab my go bag.

I recently replaced the Phantom OWB holster with an NSR Tactical IWB holster. It is more concealable and less bulky. It also works better with my velcro-backed SOE belt, as I put male velcro on the inside of the holster loops to mate it with the female velcro on the back-side of the belt.

I make my own holsters and all of them have sweat guards of some sort, not so much to protect the gun, as to protect my side from the gun.
