Out of state conference

Hey everybody,

Situation: In October I'll be headed out of state to a work related conference in St. Louis. I am prohibited from carrying at work, but as far as I know, there isn't any policy restricting carry at work related function outside the work place. We will be flying to the conference. I have reciprocity in the state I'll be in for the conference, and I'm familiar with policies and procedures relating to air travel with a firearm, so no worries there.

The Question: How can I broach the topic with my boss and talk about my desire to travel with a firearm to this conference? Keep in mind that it will be pretty obvious that I'm traveling with a firearm when I have to stop at the ticketing counter to declare a firearm, so there won't be a way to sneak it by my boss.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Tell him there is an indoor range at the destination and you are planning to get some range time in after work. No need to say more than needed IMHO. One day it might come back and bite you.

The only headache might be if you are getting paid while you are at the conference.
The company rule might be not just for the time in their building, but any time you are being paid as en employee.
Good luck!

If you're flying as ordinary passengers the TSA rigamarole would give you away anyway.

Robgmn's question as to whether a work-related activity would count as "workplace" is valid. Most of the labor law I'm familiar with is aimed at hourly employees where "workplace" is clearly defined, but in my state an employer's grip on salaried employees' time is probably tighter than for hourly.

This might be one of those situations where "the better part of valor" might be to arrange to pick up some bear spray as soon as you arrive. Of course, laws for pepper spray can be pretty strange too...

I don't think I've ever had a job where carrying a firearm wasn't required.

That said, under the radar > on the radar forego the firearm.

Lucky you. In my last profession (I'm retired now), my work settings included public schools, colleges, hospitals, Federal and state buildings, social service agencies, military bases and court rooms. Needless to say....
