My LC9 started dropping the magazine about every 2nd shot. I shipped it back and Ruger sent me a magazine (first) and the gun arrived back about a week afterwards (long story). The turnaround was great and was only without it about 13 days or so.

I didn't have time until yesterday to go to the range and when I got there, I loaded both magazines....opting to try the "new" magazine first. No sooner than loading the chamber....out she fell. I hadn't even shot it! I shot the gun and of course it fell out. I began tinkering with the magazine and realized I could pull the magazine out without hitting the release. A slight tug is all it took.

I then loaded the original magazine, expecting the worst/same, and she did just fine after having gone through about 100 rounds. Didn't drop a single time.

The problem is, although I am not going to get rid of the gun quite yet, it just doesn't leave me with a whole bunch of confidence with the gun. I will hold on to it for now and see how she does as I continue to go to the range but what would you do?

The only difference I could find is the magazine that falls out is made in the USA and the one that (so far) stays put is made in Italy.

Question #2:

I have my eye on a S&W MP 9mm. What are your thoughts on that gun? I know about S&W and the factory is only about 10 miles away and have always thought they made a reliable product.....but I always thought the same of Ruger and don't want to be disappointed again.

The m&p pistols including the shield are much better pistols. Trigger especially! The Lc9 to me is more of a budget and size conscious choice for deep concealment or pocket carry. I would not trust it until it is fixed. Have you had someone at a range or gun shop look at it?

Also, are you sure that your thumb or your grip on the pistol isn't depressing the magazine release?

I doubt he is depressing the mag release as it only happens with the one magazine. Is the malfunctioning mag an off brand? I had a glock with feed issues till I found out it was an off brand magazine I stupidly picked up at a guns show. Threw it away and my troubles went with it. IF it is not a factory mag then just toss it. I'm surprised an LC9 is giving you grief. They are a pretty widely respected small weapon. The fact that it is the one Ruger sent you adds to my confusion. Did Ruger send you a cheap replacement? Call Ruger. Something is Rotten in Denmark.

I don't see any markings that differentiate the two magazines. They both have the Ruger stamp but one says "Made in Italy" and the other "Made in USA". I hope that the issue is just the replacement magazine as I really like the little gun and it's very comfortable to carry. I just want to know I can rely on it to work as it should.

I'm a Shield guy BUT I The LC9 is a fair competitor for the Shield, the MSRP on both is the same so you really can't call it a budget gun. Just sounds like a bad mag catch. Also the triggers in MA are all #10 so buying a Shield won't do anything trigger wise until you have it re-worked or through in an APEX.

I've had my LC9CT for about a year. One of the mags started dropping out after 300-400 rounds. Since the other mag was fine, I didn't send the whole gun in but simply asked for a new mag and sent the bad one back. Although I can't recall what the bad one said on it, both my mags now say Made in Italy. No problems with mags since. I also had 3 FTEs after about 300-400 rounds - different ammo. They came in a fairly short period of time and I haven't had any since - up to probably 800-900 rounds now. I still carry the LC9 but recently bought an XDs - it's nice but kinda different. I like the long trigger on the Ruger.

If I were you I would have some one check the surfaces with a micromiter to see if there is some size difference not visible to the eye. It doesn't have to be much. All of the Ruger mags I have are made in Italy, all are factory. If you need a good price on factory mags, try www.ivanhoewholesaleoutlet.com in Mass. I bought 2 extra 10 rounder mags for my Ruger SR9 there and they were almost half what the factory list was and they were new factory stock in factory packages. Good luck.

I sell Ruger firearms, I respect the Ruger name, but I have to tell you that Ruger is having some issues in the last year or so. For instance, we recently received a shipment of Ruger American bolt action rifles that arrived without the bolts, stainless 10/22s with rusted barrels, SR22s with non-functioning triggers, and LC9s that, once you removed the magazine, you couldn't re-insert it unless you forced it. We have shipped dozens of firearms - entire shipments in some cases - back to Ruger because of serious QC issues.
