I have a carry permit in Ct. and will be going to NM for some hiking in the mountains while on vacation in a couple months. If I read it correctly I can open carry while I am in that state. Am I correct in my interpretation or ???

all opinions appreciated.

I live in NM and I believe You can open carry while there. I don't have My CCW yet, but no permit is required to open carry in NM. Also not sure if just visiting, but if you live here You can keep Your firearm concealed in Your car (It's considered an extension of Your home) but has to be carried openly as soo as You exit.

Well first of all if you carry concealed in NM with one in the chamber it is only a petty crime. Most law Enforcement if they ask and you tell them you have a firearm on you they will typically will not do anything. You can open carry in most places. With the exception of schools, courts, and Indian reservation. And federal buildings. Now as far as hiking it depends where. You must find out who is in charge of where you are hiking. Because the State of New Mexico forest department does not allow to carry period in some areas. Also if it is federal land they may not allow you to carry also. Now personally I always carry while hiking. You never know what type of animal you will run into four legged or two.

It's sovereign land, like a country all there own, so they get to make their own laws within their borders.

And most Indian tribes in Washington allow carrying firearms on the reservations. I guess the New Mexico Indians must be more "progressive".
