open carried first time at gander mnt

I never open carry just conseal carry with my glock 23 with either a uncle mikes iwb or blackhawk belt holster. Walked up too the doors and read the sign that said conceal carry and open carry customers welcomed. So I was like " I'm about to open carry for the hell of it. " anyways walked in and started my shopping. Grabbed a cart by the front desk and they greeted me as usual. Went and picked out a couple of shirts, and checked out some new guns in the show cases. A few people looked at my gun but it didn't bother me. Went and got a box of hornady hollow point self defence rounds and some target ammo. All the employees were still very friendly and had a pleasant expierence. As I walked out and concealed my firearm and went out too my truck. Wish most places if not all were the same way.

Glad to hear there were no complaints. Here in VA open carry is a very common thing but, lately ive noticed very few who open carry. I prefer concealed just avoid the situation of someone confronting me about it, however i see absolutely nothing wrong with it

open carry

I don't open carry. I don't like attention. I also don't want to be the first threat a gunman sees. That's just me though.

Good to hear you did it... The first few times are quite nerve-racking (is that actually a word? lol) but it gets so you dont even pay much attention about it, BTW, why didnt you post this in the "Open Carry" forum?

If it said conceal carry and open carry customers welcomed on the door then I wouldnt expect many issues to arise. I'll look at your gun too. Just to see what it is, might even ask about it. (looking for another...)

We only have Cabelas here, and they take your gun at the door. I'll shop at the smaller local places first.

What do you mean they take your guns at the door. They actually disarm you? Frack that noise!

I do open carry. I haven't received that much attention compared to when I was concealed carrying. I don't want to be a victim in the first place, and value the deterrent aspect of open carry very much.

I guess I can't call troll since this was posted in cc forum...maybe Android needs an update so it says what forum it's in at the bottom along with "published at"

I have never seen anyone get searched but EVERY firearm I have ever seen go thru the front door was met by an employee and the employee carries the gun back to the gun counter. Same with a new purchase, an employee carries it to the front door and escorts you out.

I dont recall the exact wording on the sign but will take a pic next time Im there.

EDIT: What Im reading on the web is that the policy is for sales and returns and that Cabelas follows local state law.

I'm not decided on open carry but generally feel surprise is the better option. If TX had open carry I would do so at least part of the time, and I would carry a nice Colt 1911 Govt model in stainless.

And some store clerk taking my gun? Not a chance in heck of that.

The great thing about open carry is I can surprise the bad guy too. Bad guys look for the opportunity of weakness. If for some reason they feel that's me, they will be surprised when I fight back. Even if I don't draw my handgun, since the real surprise is that they didn't choose a victim. Open or concealed.

Ok, here is the info I got from TENA on the live customer chat at Cabelas.

Rich M:
I was wondering wat Cabelas policy is concerning its customers carrying a firearm while in the store. Specifically, open carry and concealed carry with license.

Tena:
I know that if you have a concealed carry licence you are able to do this. You just need to check in at the front desk. Unfortunately, I do not know the policy on open carry. I would suggest contacting the retail store you plan on visiting directly for their policy on that.

Tena:
Actually, I just recheacked. We have made the decision to comply with state laws in regards to open carry. We do not ask customers to check concealed or open carry weapons where the state has laws governing this situation. Our signs refer to firearms that are being returned or sold to Cabela's.

Tena: So you can do both if your state permits.

Her first reply seemed odd, glad she rechecked.

I have shopped at Cabellas frequently, and there is a "No Guns Allowed" sign with another sign that says permit holders do not have to comply with the "NGA" posting. This is in a must conceal state, and I have never had an issue. I guess it all depends on store management.

Thanks Rich M, that's good info - I'll put Cabelas back on my list.

What state was this Gander Mountain in? The one I go to has a sign that says if you bring your gun, an employee needs to check to make sure its unloaded, so I just keep it concealed rather than go through that crap. Im not sure if their sign is only in regards to returning a gun or whatever, but when you buy a gun, an employee holds it until you are outside the store...

Congrats on your first OC! I CC but to each his own.

I did OC once, at a wally world and then to a gas station. The only reaction I got aside from a mother ushering her kids away from me while giving me a nasty look at walmart was the clerk at the gas station who asked if I had a permit "for that". I said "yes, but right about now what difference could that possibly make?" He said, "er, uh, well, I dunno" and that was the that. I've simply decided to CCW since.

Anyway, boring story there but congrats on your OC career start!

I agree with Rogerw. Why be the first threat a bad guy see's. I know we would all like to think we are badest thing walking while carrying and we have all gone over scenario's of just what we might do should the need arise. The truth is though, we are not as vigilant as the bad guy looking for a gun and making every effort to get your's when you have a weak moment.

I really feel that unless you are really out there looking to save someone's day, which to me that means you don't belong carrying a gun unless it's your job, the bad guy is either gonna do his best to get your 'open carry' gun either with a ball bat from behind or shoot you first when he decides to use the gun he has.

I'm not trying to say whats right or wrong, just what the truth is. I'll conceal my weapon at all cost and I won't be the guy with the Sig, or Glock or NRA sticker's on my pickup truck. Thats just an invitation for the bad guy to steal my weapon out of the truck when I'm in a resturant that serves liquor, where in SC we are not allowed to carry.

Take this with a grain of salt if you desire, but this was spoken like a true hard core CCer who think his way is the only right way. If CC is your style, so be it, But stop trying to push your agenda on everyone else. Isint the true matter here the fact that the OPer is actually CARRYING!!!

What difference does it make if it is OC or CC? He lives in a state that doesn't restrict his 2A right by making him carry "So as not to offend those around him" concealed. Hat off to HIM!

And if you really want to be, as I call them "the invizables" then stay off the blogs and stop trying to push your view on everyone else here. And no! Your damned dog is not better than my dog!

I'm not trying to say whats right or wrong, just what the truth is.

How does this sentence even make sense? I'm not saying you guys are wrong for open carrying, I'm just saying you will be attacked first. It's the truth. Because I said so. Period.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but its far far far from the truth. The best the hardcore cc'ers have come up with is a mentally ill person claiming to be DEA and attacking an open carrier. You know what else mentally ill people attack? Cars, shoppers, stuffed animals...the reason a mentally ill patient becomes violent is because of their mental condition, not because of an object.

Another is an open carrier allegedly targeted for his weapon in Milwaukie. If you guys want to claim these as evidence, then can't I claim all attacks against CC'ers, where the attacker was either killed or got away, were because they concealed their handguns? You have no confession from the bad guy why he chose his victim in either case.
