Wife wants gun for in home. She's not real familiar with gun but she has shot my 40 cal and 9mm. She wants 380 and I said maybe a 410 shotgun. Point and pull trigger. Problem I have is if they confiscate long guns then what. Open for recommendations. Thanks

Confiscation is the last worry. They are NOT coming for your guns. If you own it ,then it is yours. If anything they will make you register your pistols. Anything used for hunting will not be required to be registered.

They'd probably go after your .40 and 9mm before they came after a single shot or double barrel .410. Just sayin...

If you are thinking .410 for home defense, look at the Taurus Judge or the S&W Governor. They are also making some wicked defense loads for these guns.

I recommend revolver of choice with laiser. Make sure she gets training. If murphy' s law will ever raise it's ugly head it will be when she is trully threaten. Simple and reliable is best choice.

They will only confiscate them if you let them.

Just make sure she can handle the weapon!
My wife wanted a small .380 so I picked up a Taurus TCP .380 for her. It is small, little and carries 7 rounds total. The perfect gun right?
Wrong! Small .380's have a bit of a kick to them. The recoil, for her, was worse than my P95!
I will admit the gun barks like a bigger dog. It's not the gun you go and run a couple hundred rounds through at the range!
I, on the other hand, friggin love it! It just disappears in a pocket and loaded with Critical Defense, I trust it to do the job.

My point is, let your wife do the picking by SHOOTING the weapon first, if you can. I could have purchased a good .38 instead of the TCP had she been able to fire one before buying one!

I vote shotgun, she racks it and gives you time to let her know it's you. That is also the "warning shot" for intruders. They stay after hearing a shotgun rack they are taking their life in their own hands.

I think a lot of people new to guns have a similar misconception that smaller is easier to handle or better for them. Its actually the opposite. Better off getting a handgun that is full size especially if only kept in the home/taken to the range. I know it could be a little intimidating to a beginner or smaller frame person but anyone willing to learn could handle a full size handgun chambered in 9mm, .40 and even .45. the longer grip gives you a much better purchase on the gun. Longer barrel balances out and adds a little weight to the gun to mitigate recoil especially in calibers with a bit more punch. That said, imo you should probably start off with a .22 to get the feel of how a firearm operates before moving up to a more powerful caliber. I know i'm preaching to the choir but maybe this helps some people new to the 2nd amendment. Also want to add a little philosophy of use: Consider owning multiple firearms to serve certain functions. For instance, own a full size/service size pistol for home defense and a sub-compact/pocket pistol for conceal carry. Own a rifle designed for hunting for hunting and a sporting rifle for training at the range/plinking (not to say you cannot plink with your hunting rifle. I love shooting my Rem 700 in .308). This is just how I view the big picture and I am also aware that people may not be able to afford multiple guns. My point is that there is not really an all around use gun out there depending on what you intend to do with a gun.

What guns I don't own any guns. I have nothing to register sir.

If all she wants is a gun in the home and doesn't intend to carry, you might consider a two snub revolvers. Put one in a gunvault in your safe room (bedroom?) and another in a gunvault where the center of family activity is. They are easy. Just point and shoot. Nothing to pump, rack or load. Just pull it out, point and shoot. While a shotgun is a great defensive weapon it is not suited for extreme close quarters defense by persons not well trained. And most personal defense shootings occur very quickly at close range and are extremely violent. Hard to get any rifle into play in that situation.

All my home defense shotguns are chambered. All the intruder may hear is the safety click.
Racking a shotgun gives away your location and a chance for the intruders to fire at you first.

Please do yourself and your wife a favor... do NOT pick out her gun for her... let her choose which gun, pistol or shotgun or a shotgun pistol like the Judge, SHE wants because if she likes it she will train with it and will be confident in using it when the need arises.

Let me suggest taking your wife to a gun shop with a range where she can handle a bunch of pistols/shotguns to see which one she likes to hold onto... and then rent one and go shoot it. Although getting to shoot a shotgun might be a bit of a problem but perhaps you have friends? I suggested a gun shop with a range for pistols because generally they have a much larger selection for her to choose from than your friends do.

Yeah... you will spend some money driving there and for renting the gun(s) she chooses and the range to try them out but... in the end she will have the gun she likes and will use and you didn't waste hundreds of dollars on a gun she hates and will not use.
