OMG we've gone beyond Sheep Dawgs now you can be a "Sheppard"

Bullet Proof

So now we’ve gone beyond being just a sheepdog to become a Sheppard, a leader of sheepdogs and a trainer /teacher of sheep dogs

IMO this takes the whole “sheepdog concept” to the level of a cult.
I don’t even know where to go with this, what can I say that I haven’t said before? Now we have people making a warrior religion out of it.

Not worried about the flock, they are on their own.

I view myself as the alpha male protecting my pack. And be very afraid of the momma protecting her cubs, at least in my pack.

No alpha's in your pack prepared to defend, then the future of your pack is in jeopardy.

It sounds like your jealous for not thinking of it first.:jester:

Now, here shortly we're going to get people sayng that being a sheepdog has nothing to do with carrying a gun because nutnfancy (all praise be his name) said so.

Before you say that you need to watch this video in which our hero nutnfancy (all praise be his name) states

That a sheep dog must be ARMED yes he emphasized ARMED.

States that sheep dogs are back up cops

Calls sheep dogs "free cops" (as in not supported by taxpayer dollars )

States that “sheepdogs” are obligated to carry their firearms at all times with the specific intent that they be able to “protect the sheep” in the event of a shooting

And FWIW if nutnfancy (all praise be his name) were to ever ask me if I were armed he'd get told it's not his business

Killology???? Holy cow (forgive the religious inference) This guy is nuts. But Pretty funny, in a lame sort of way. I'm most impressed that he kept a straight face while filming.

Nothing wrong with helping other people. Im not sure why you attached a label to it. Just nice enough to risk my own life and freedom to help someone i don't know stay alive...it's called empathy. I teach my kids to help other people, does that make me a Shepherd? Nope. It makes me a good dad and my kids responsible citizens. I feel sorry for those of you who only help yourselves. Greed is ugly.

Hmm, not sure what to make of that guy... the one part that kinda struck me was referring that the "shepherds" are leaders in every aspect of their lives. I interpreted it as he believes himself to be a leader... meh, I have found that the best leaders are usually the reluctant (yet capable) followers who find themselves placed into the role of leader b/c there is no one else to do it.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to help other people, of course not... in fact, this world might be a better place if more people did help others. But, I get what Treo is implying... some people take it a wee bit too far and do turn it into sort of a cult ideology. This moves past simply being a good person and teaching others the same into (in some cases) itching for the next crime or 'active shooter' so they can save the day.

Haven't yet watched the videos yet but can comment on "The Bulletproof Mind" which is a series presented by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman (retired) and his points are extremely well-articulated and well-researched. He too uses, and perhaps coined the idea of "sheepdogs." Frankly, I too agree that there's nothing wrong with being of the mind that we're all in the same game together, to have a peaceable, co-existence on this planet and to share in the obligation to one another the duties and responsibilities of maintaining that peace and co-existence by dealing with the ugliness in the world that seeks to disrupt that.

I'm not intending to flame anyone with my remarks, but I feel the mockery or jest derived from this line of thinking, as "extreme" or "over the top" as it might appear, is frankly brought on by a cultural bias in the societies we live in that has demonized the idea that we can provide and control our own means to self-defense, and the defense of other innocent life. As has been pointed out in this thread, to think that you're only responsible to yourself in a society, is greedy, and selfish. Wikipedia (doesn't really matter who I cite, the gist is always the same) defines society as "a group of people involved with each other through persistent relations, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or social territory, subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations". As a person living within a society, I cannot assume that my actions will not impact another individual, and were I to act negligently, I would expect my peers within that society to hold me accountable for that negligence. Just the same, I feel that there is merit in providing for a defense of our society and the individuals that comprise it through shared responsibility to protect one another, using whatever term you'd prefer to attach to that responsibility. As Mr. Grossman had said in his presentation, if some atrocity were to unfold, and you aren't prepared to stop it and have to watch it unfold helplessly, your future is a very grim one, no matter the outcome.

<snipped for brevity>

I have to admit this is one of the most reasoned posts I've ever read on the subject.

The following quoted post pretty much sums up my opinion of self appointed sheep dogs

The biggest problem I have with Mr. Grossman’s theories (remember this guy has never served in a line unit, never served in combat and never even heard much less fired “a shot in anger”) is not so much the theories themselves but the way I’ve seen so many people twist them to fulfill some kind of Bushi-Do fantasy.

I have a coworker that is an absolute devotee of both nutnfancy and Mr. Grossman and every time I see this guy he goes into a rant about how if you are a gun owner and you’re not a member of the NRA (I am) you’re a blood sucking leech who is letting them do your fighting for you and if you don’t have a concealed handgun permit or if you do have a concealed hand gun permit and you ever leave your home un armed (I don't) you are a stench in the nostrils of honest men because “you aren’t willing or prepared to fulfill your civic duty as a sheep dog” (direct quote BTW). Of course we’ve all seen similar discourses on various gun forums.

I am not a psychologist but the impression I get from most (by no means all) of the Grossman followers is that they don’t have a lot of self worth to begin with and then Grossman comes along with his “sheep dog” ethos and gives them something outside themselves to attach what self worth they do have to. Suddenly they’re not nobodies, they’re Sheep Dogs, the defenders of the flock; they have a mission in life to protect the poor defenseless sheep. And the build up this superhero fantasy in their minds and in my mind that’s dangerous.

I’ve seen too many real people, in the real world take that "sheep dog" mind set and use it give themselves a reason to interject themselves into situations that they have no business being in. To be clear when I say that I’m not talking about taking on a robber at 7-11 I’m talking about stupid stuff like “patrolling” the neighborhood on the fourth of July in a security guard uniform telling people you’re a cop and that they’d better not shoot off any fireworks or “patrolling” a neighborhood at night, armed looking for “miscreants” (ask George Zimmerman how that worked out for him) or (and this one isn’t a real life experience I read it here) entering a neighbor’s property to question someone sitting in their car minding their own business in the neighbor’s driveway. It’s been my observation that sooner or later these folks’ Walter Mitty fantasies get them into water over their head. It's also been my observation that the folks that get the maddest when I say this stuff are the ones that most need to hear it

That’s why I get nervous whenever the sheep dog topic comes up.
