KTUL is reporting that an unidentified OK state senator ordered - through intermediaries (and without revealing his or her name) - that 40 sheriffs gathered at the state capitol for their annual meet/greet/lobby needed to disarm themselves in order to remain on capitol property. Apparently the unidentified senator was fine with armed state troopers in the capitol building, but not elected, armed sheriffs.

Now they know how it feels to be a peon citizen.

Umm.. with a few exceptions, it has been the sheriffs that have been most supportive of our Second Amendment rights.

Absolutely. The sherifs here in TN are some of the biggest advocates of our rights to own and carry firearms. I recently took a class with the Knox county sherifs dept and the instructor offered the whole class free instruction in defensive pistol tactics and some of the new gun owners were offered free safety classes.

I am so glad they all bailed rather than being disarmed.

I wasn't knocking them, on the contrary what they did was just what they should have done. I just hope for any of them that may not be 100% pro constitution, specifically in this instance the 2nd that they remember what it feels like to be treated like a bad guy.

The intermediaries or anyone else who knows the identity of the senator who anonymously sent the message to disarm have the duty to reveal the identity of that senator. I can tell you this much: they should not have left. They had a legal right to be there and they were carrying in accordance with OK laws. They are also ELECTED OFFICIALS. They should have gone office to office until they found the guilty senator and placed them under arrest for interfering with a law enforcement officer in the exercise of their duties. Like it or not, lobbying is part of the job of a sheriff; there is nothing in any law of any state of which I am aware that says that they must be unarmed while doing so. By leaving they gave this gun grabber exactly what he/she wanted; it was a victory for the antis who would even like to see all but an elite, ideologically sound group of law enforcement officers (evidently the OK State Troopers fit this description) unarmed.

We don't have keystone cops here in the US like they do in Britain. We have LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS who are charged with keeping the peace and given the means to do so.

I believe in most states that the county sheriff has Leo duties across county lines and that would include the state Capitol. I know in virginia they are allowed to continue a hot pursuit into neighboring counties. Now county police have no such authority.

Wow. I'm not even sure if a State Senator can order such a thing. Senators aren't directly in charge of Sheriffs as far as I know. I would have told the Senator to pound sand and show me where he has the authority.

What's the difference between the county sheriff and county police? Or did you mean city police?

Either way, under LEOSA they were perfectly within their rights to carry in there and would have been well within their rights to tell the messenger to tell said senator they'll disarm or leave when he comes and kisses each and every one of their asses.

I'll tell you what I really think needs to happen: all 40 of the sheriffs need to return to the State Capitol along with all the deputies they can bring with them, and they need to make it clear that they are not leaving until the senator who would require them to disarm comes forward and reveals his identity.

If your average OK citizen can't carry at the Capital then your average OK cops (unless specifically detailed as Capital guards) shouldn't be able to either

I agree with eidolon on this too. No exceptions for law enforcement, if anything there should be more restrictions on government officials than citizens.

Andey,

In our county we have the Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff is elected by the citizenry and the Sheriff deputizes the department. His duties are to protect the county citizens from criminals but also from the state legislators in case they should usurp the county citizens' rights.

We also have a county police department. The odd thing about this is that it pretty much is a waste of tax payers and several people have tried to run an election to merge the two. The absolutely ironic thing is that anyone with LE privileges in the county has them because of the Sheriff. If a federal agency, local police department, or state police department tries to cause trouble for the people in the county, the Sheriff can remove their law enforcement privileges. This actually occurred not too long ago in CA.

As much as I am reluctant to agree with anything eidolon says, he is right on this one.......

Except for the fact our focus should be getting the citizenry allowed to carry in places such as the capitol, not cheering and saying, HA, look the Sheriff's can't and snub our noses.

All this does is make it sound OK for certain infringements are A-OK.
