If I purchase a firearm from a friend of mine.....what do I have to do to legally have it? Do I have to take it to an FFL and fill out paperwork? We are both in Ohio?

Thanks for your help

You most likely should call your local County office, or Sheriff's office and inguire on the Leagalities of proper procedure's.

As long as you are both residents of Ohio, there is nothing you need to do beside exchanging the gun and the money. FFLs are only needed for sales between residents of two different states or if you are buying from a licensed dealer.

Here's the BATFE FAQ on the subject:

Did you used to be NavyLt? Did you get a promotion?

Good eye. I remember an older post where he mentioned a pending promotion.

As for Ohio purchases, as long as you have no reason to believe the receiving party is disallowed from ownership your fine. I have yet to go to a ffl for a purchase. Keep uncle Sam out of it. (And don't bother trying to register it. Portage county sheriff laughed me off the phone. Asked me if I was from a commie state.)
