Ohio CCW application requirement

I have been a resident of Ohio for the past 11 years and would like to apply for my Concealed Carry license.

30 or so years ago, I received a pistol permit license from the state of NY.

Does anyone know if I need to take the CCW course or can I use my NY permit to get my CCW license.

Thanks...

Chris

How about informing yourself about the requirements for a carry permit by getting information from the issuing authority? In your case, that would be your Sheriff's Office and the Ohio AG (read pamphlet Link Removed). The linked pamphlet lists the requirements. Only your Sheriff's Office can tell you if they accept your documentation of meeting the listed requirements.

On the other hand, you could just ask on an Internet gun forum and get random answers. Then, you go to the Sheriff's Office and tell them what Internet gun gurus said.

Realize that laws change, often quickly. Without citing and analyzing current laws, no Internet gun guru will give you accurate information. An Ohio instructor, who should know the current law (but sometimes doesn't), will likely tell you to take an appropriate class. The Sheriff's Office, which has the same reliability when it comes to knowledge of the law, will likely tell you the same.

The AG pamphlet mentioned above also contains a copy of the application. In Ohio, one can apply not only to the sheriff in your county of residence but also to the sheriff of any county adjacent to your county of residence. It pays to find out which sheriffs provide good service and which extend the application processing time out to the full 45 days allowed by law. I drive an hour to an adjacent county because that sheriff issues the license the same day whereas my local sheriff provides notoriously bad service because my county is the most liberal in Ohio.

A good place to find out which counties are good and which are not is here:
