OH CCW Certification

Ok, After reading about the Ohio requirements in regards to what is accepted to obtain your CCW, please help me with this one. When it refers to veterans and retired personel, would this apply to me if say I am retired army? Would I be able to apply for my OH CCW with proof that I retired Army? Or will I still need to show my certificate for CCW or even my certificate from my Police Academy? I am a certified NRA Instructor for the CCW, but I obtained my current CCW in WV off of my Police Creds. I dont have a CCW certificate to use. Doesnt make any sense that I am an Instructor for the state of OH but would still have to take a CCW class to get my permit. Kinda strange situation I guess.

Your credentials for "certified NRA Instructor" should be more than sufficient to qualify you for an OH permit.

The following is from the OHIO Atty Generals CCW Booklet:

Training and Educational Requirements

Training and Competency Certification
Before you obtain a license to carry a concealed handgun, you will
need proof of your competency certification. Competency can be
established by providing one of the following:

A certificate of completion of a firearms safety course that was
offered by or under the auspices of the National Rifle Association
(NRA) containing certain minimum educational requirements; or
wouldnt your instructors credentials prove you know the material?

A certificate of completion of a class that was open to the public
that used instructors approved by the National Rifle Association
or Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC), or approved
instructors of another state and was offered under the authority of
a law enforcement agency of Ohio or another state, a college, or
a firearms training school that contains the minimum educational
requirements; or

A document that shows the applicant is an active or reserve member
of the armed forces, or was honorably discharged within the past six
years, or is a retired highway patrol trooper, or is a retired peace officer
or federal law enforcement officer and who, through the position,
acquired experience with handguns or other firearms that was
equivalent to the minimum educational requirements; or
A certificate of completion of a class not otherwise described in
this publication that was conducted by an instructor who was
certified by an official or entity of Ohio, another state, the United
States government, or the NRA that complies with the minimum
educational requirements; or

An affidavit from a qualified instructor that attests to the applicant’s
completion of a course that satisfied the minimum educational
requirements. (provide your own as a qualified instructor, lol)

You would think that it would be fine. But from asking my NRA Counselor it will not work. But then again I guess it depends on the County in which I go to apply in. Some are Anti and some are very Pro. I have a few things to justify my training except the NRA CCW Class which I TEACH. So who know.

How long have you been out of the service? There is a time limit on if it can be used. Ohio has a set number of hours needed to get your CHL (10 in the classroom and 2 on the range). This is why your credentials will not work no range time.

I am a NRA Instructor as well so I know what the hours are as far class and what is required in OH. And my Creds did work for my CCW in WV and they would as well in OH if I still had them. I do have my Academy Ceritificate which has Range Time on it. I dont know of any Police Academy that doesnt has Range Time. And A lot more than 2 hours. So what is the time frame on Military and I retired in June 2008. And my Police Academy Cert was in Sept 2008. It doesnt pass the commen sense test to have a NRA Instructor to have to go to CCW clas when I teach the class. So what I was asking was the time line on Acaemy cert date and my retitrement date.

Your dd214 may work depends on the department call and talk to them. Was the the academy Ohio or WV. That will affect if it will work. Have been told Ohio wants Ohio.

My cert is Federal which trumps OH. Once again I'm asking on the time line requirements. I know what's excepted and what's not. I'm looking for time times in which they will still except them. Knowone seems to know and I can't find it anywhere. I have quit a few contacts and also grew up in Ohio until I went into the army. Knowone seems to know. So I'll just wait until I wait my 45 days and see.

My advice is just like the others. Visit you local Sheriff's Department and ask them. The worst they can say to you is that you have to take a class.
