I'm really trying here: :moil:. I just can't seem to dig up very much sympathy.

Funny how his PTSD didn't get diagnosed or become an issue until now.

Harless' partner should be equally held accountable for allowing his behavior to go unchecked.

Actually, his partner should be held responsible for his PERJURY on the stand.

Riddle me this Batman - Complaints against him began in 2000, but according to his UNION rep. his PTSD didn't shpow up until 2003. They should both be fired.

So the Union wants us to believe that him getting his finger nearly bitten off triggered his PTSD.

Sorry but I call bull sh!t!..

Come on man! We have troops getting shot at and shooting rag head's every day ....Now that is a reason to have PTSD....

The Union needs to stop defending idiots who deserve to lose their job!

It makes the Union look stupid and out of touch with reality!

Man up dude!

They really need to fire the dispatcher too. He should have known before he even left the cruiser that the driver of the car had a CCW permit. I live near where this happened and I just can't believe how this snowballed into what it did. Harless definately had some anger issues and it became worse when he didn't do what he was supposed to do and approach the driver first. No sympathy from me. :moil:

Damn I haven't seen the good old boy network kick in like that since I left the South years ago. I wonder if a someone not in a police uniform could make the same threats and have no basis for prosecution found? I got to give the union credit for being creative with the PTSD crap. It would have been nice if the reporters dug up the facts on the incident about his finger. I'm wondering if the suspect went for the cops gun and bit his finger because the cop threatened to shoot him dead and cave in his skull? That is dash cam footage I'd really like to see!

I bet when the cop gets denied benefits for his "mental/PTSD" problems, he'll go to another state and get a badge again! I just hope he doesn't come to my state!!

So what else is new in this screwed up lawyer-filled country. It is never anyone's fault for literally everything. It is the fault of alphabet soup psychological or medical problems. As said up front, his partner should have also been fired. There is one aspect of this lawyer-filled slime we wallow in that I can see here. Sue the living heck out of the town and make them pay big time.

We only remember the "10%" and not the rest that protect/serve. Glad he was canned and hope someone is watching to insure he never regains a badge.

I wonder what would happen if Joe Citizen exhibited the same behavior towards a police officer? Where are the criminal charges?

I've asked exactly the same question in several fora, as recently as this morning. I don't ever recall getting a straight answer.

Arbitration won't help him. He's dangerous. If allowed back on the force he may repeat his acts. Repeated bad acts take on the element of intent and the city can be treated as if they intended to cause harm to his next victim. Should he win at arbitration just fire him for coming in late. Then fire him for taking too long of a lunch. Then for other insubordinations. Eventually he'll get the mesage. In fighting for him I feel the PBA is acting in bad faith where the public is concerned.

They don't care. Do you think the FOP cared what the public thought when they went on NPR's All Things Considered to demand that Chicago cops be exempted from laws disarming those convicted of domestic violence?

The opinions of citizens mean less than nothing to them... at least if those opinions conflict with what they want.

Usually mental illnesses are not discovered until the person starts acting oddly, doing weird things, etc. For him, his mental illness became evident when he started harassing this person to the outrageous extent he did. You may think the timing is funny, but I dont think PTSD is funny no matter when a person gets diagnosed with it. This cop does need help and he needs to find another job. The public has lost his trust and he has acted in ways that go against the professional standards for his job and in his department. Not to mention making his coworkers look bad. Time for this guy to work somewhere else.

Except that this is the THIRD documented case of similar behaviour from this same "officer". Canton PD are hung out to dry, as they have KNOWN about this guy's imbalande for a LONG TIME.. since 2003, at least, I believe. I hope the victim of this cop's criminal behaviour is able to prosecute a large civil rights lawsuit againnst the city and the individuals responsible for this known imbalanced employee continuing in his dangerous position of power over the people of Canton. His problems were known, yet he was left in position to do harm. There is a reason epileptics are denied most commercial driving licenses... they have known issues that could put the public at risk. Yet this guy was on the loose in Canton, threatening innocent citizens with lethal force for many years.

It takes more than one incident to create a pattern. This department caught his onto the pattern after 3 incidents, which is pretty quick. After his third problem, people started to notice a problem pattern with him. His PTSD was also not diagnosed until after the pattern of problematic behavior formed. Thats how mental illness is. Just because somebody screws up once doesn't mean they are crazy, not even twice. Once the person's mental illness affects them frequently and severely is it noticed and diagnosed.

Taken from the DSM IV (used for diagnosing mental disorders, etc.). Notice the keyword "persistent", not once, many times.

D. Persistent symptoms of increased arousal (not present before the trauma), as indicated by two (or more) of the following:
(1) Difficulty falling or staying asleep
(2) Irritability or outbursts of anger
(3) Difficulty concentrating
(4) Hypervigilance
(5) Exaggerated startle response

If the article is correct in saying that the officer only acted out of line in 3 traffic encounters, then it seems to me like they figured out pretty quick that this guy is the problem and should not have a badge. I dont think you would agree that you deserved to be fired after messing up once or twice at work. When you hit three mistakes, then you might agree that you are the problem.

Sorry, Deserteagle, I don't buy it. Therapists can be paid to say anything in court. In addition, manic episodes causes by PTSD are usually triggered by situations similar to the circumstances which caused the trauma in the first place. I hardly see somebody informing a police officer of their permit to lawfully carry their firearm as traumatic for the police officer. I don't know, maybe the guy who tried to bite his finger off told him about his permit first, but I highly doubt it.

Hopefully, the union is only pushing for a medical retirement vice getting fired. I hope they are not trying to get him re-instated on the police force. Ex-Officer Daniel Harlass is a menace to society and should be behind bars either in a prison or in a secure mental facility. That's where one of us Joe Citizens would be if we pulled that crap on a cop (if, like Panheadzz said, we survived).

I find it interesting that nowhere is any military service mentioned. PTSD is something real, that is attributed to our fighting military men and women, and not someone who once got their finger bitten. IMHO to try to use it as an a "reason" or "excuse" is a slap in the face of those brave men and women who served, and endured prolonged exposure to death and violence.
Just my opinion.
