Off Topic: People's Republik of California

Heading out there in a couple of weeks to see family. There's no other reason for me to go, especially since I can't even bring a derringer or I go to prison (if caught). And, since I'd like to keep my freedom, I need to figure out other ways to defend myself effectively... or at least as effectively as possible.

Here's what I'm considering:
Pepper Spray (up to 2.5 oz)
Folding knife (bias toward closure, blade less than 3", single-bladed)

I have a cheap canister of Ruger pepper spray and a Kershaw blade I'll be bringing. Any tips or advice? Avoiding the worst areas, but one of my relatives lives in Murietta, right on the front line of some bad things going down.

Slight exaggeration there.....

How are you getting to California and where are you coming from? You certainly can bring a handgun on your trip to California with you and if you are driving through other states why give up your self-defense along the way? Before entering California lock your unloaded handgun and 10 round or less magazine in a case and that is all that is required. Once you are inside a hotel room or residence you can load the gun for over night protection. If you are flying, the same requirements for transporting the handgun in checked baggage also satisfies California's handgun transport laws.

Heading straight to the Oceanside area from Arizona. Staying in a hotel. Seeing family and heading straight back. Don't want to take the chance of losing my firearm or my freedom to the Republik. It's quite stressful as I'm used to carrying nearly 24 hours a day presently. To go from that to carrying zero hours, feeling totally naked and unprepared, is what's got me worried.

I picked up a canister of Sabre Red (a little iffy if the pepper spray + tear gas is legal in Ca) and have a Kershaw knife. I'm afraid that's as good as it gets. Heck, even a Monkey Fist, which is a pretty ineffective weapon, is illegal there. Crazy how people live.

Get some bear repellant, or just wasp spray. You can carry your gun in a locked box, or trigger locked in some kind of pouch out of reach and the ammo has to be locked in the trunk or whatever. Just do the speed limit and don't get stopped, it's not 75 here. You would destroy your front end if you went that fast anyway, comifornia steals all the road taxes to pay the unions.

I too will be heading to California soon and have a question or two:
We keep a shotgun and AR15 in the toolbox of our pickup truck. Can we take those?
In order to transport a handgun in the cab of the truck does it just have to be in a locked container, unloaded, with a magazine of only 10 rounds or less?
