Obama to beef up Mexico border policy Story Highlights

The Obama administration announced a major increase in security funding and the deployment of U.S.-Mexico border agents Tuesday as part of a comprehensive new plan to beef up resources at the Mexican border.

The plan commits $700 million to bolster Mexican law enforcement and crime prevention efforts. The funds will provide, among other things, five new helicopters to increase mobility for the Mexican army and air force as well as new surveillance aircraft for the Mexican navy.

The initiative is designed to help with Mexico's accelerating war against violent drug cartels.

The plan, developed by the departments of Justice and Homeland Security, calls for doubling the number of border security task force teams as well as moving a significant number of other federal agents, equipment and resources to the border.

It also involves greater intelligence sharing aimed at cracking down on the flow of money and weapons into Mexico, which helps fuel the drug trade, the officials said. Watch CNN's Michael Ware analyze U.S. efforts in Mexico's drug war »

"The president is concerned by the increased level of violence, particularly in [the border cities of] Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana, and the impact that it is having on the communities on both sides of the border," the White House press office said in a statement.

"He believes that the United States must continue to monitor the situation and guard against spillover into the United States. [He] is firmly committed to ensuring our borders are secure, and we are doing all we can to reduce illegal flows in both directions across the border."

The plan also will fund enhanced communications technology for Mexican prosecutors, law enforcement and immigration officials.

The funds, meant to assist what administration officials described as an "anti-smuggling effort," will complement ongoing U.S. aid to Mexico under the Merida initiative, a three-year $1.4 billion package aimed at helping Mexico fight the drug cartels with law enforcement training, military equipment and improved intelligence cooperation.

The administration also is looking to increase intelligence cooperation on the border with Mexican authorities, tighten enforcement of existing U.S. executive orders to go after drug trafficking money and money laundering and step up investigation and prosecution of cartel-related activities in the United States, the officials said.

To help strengthen the U.S. side of the border, the administration also plans to triple the number of Department of Homeland Security intelligence analysts dedicated to stopping Mexican-related violence. It also will increase the number of immigration officials working in Mexico, double the number of "Violent Criminal Alien" teams on the border, strengthen the presence of border canine units and quadruple the number of border liaison officers working with Mexican law enforcement.

It also will make an additional $59 million in federal funds available to support state, local and tribal border law enforcement operations.

At the same time, more agents from the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives will be deployed to the border region. The agents will be given updated equipment and surveillance technology to help track the movement of cash, drugs and weapons.

"We are discussing more things we can do to address the very real problem of currency and weapons moving into Mexico and at the same time trying to prevent potential border spillover," one senior administration official said.

The plan is scheduled to be announced at the White House by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Deputy Secretary of State Jim Steinberg and U.S. Deputy Attorney General David Ogden.

The announcement comes shortly ahead of a planned visit of three Cabinet secretaries to Mexico before President Obama visits there next month. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visits Mexico City this week, to be followed next week by Napolitano and Attorney General Eric Holder.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has been pushing back against U.S. criticism of drug cartel-related violence, which killed about 6,500 people in Mexico last year. In speeches and other recent comments, Calderon has said the United States also must take responsibility because much of the demand for drugs and most of the weapons used by narcotraffickers come from the United States.

"Mexico believes we are not acknowledging the transitional nature of the problem and the role the U.S. is playing in this," another senior administration official said. "So we are looking at what U.S. law enforcement agencies can do to respond to the Mexican concerns."

Clinging to God and guns
I most certainly disagree!!! BHO is working very hard to destroy this nation by spending money we don't have!! Folks if this continues we will have another "Great Depression". Possibly worse than the one in 1930.

I too want to know how we can send millions of dollars to help Mexico, but our government cant help, or "bail" our own people out? We the people have let our government go unchecked for to long! The very people we voted in to lead us, and protect us, are screwing us with no K-Y! I find it ironic that the nationally accepted symbol for the Democratic Party (even by Democrats) is the jackass! Ok, donkey- but really- whats the difference? If only human donkeys couldnt reproduce... just think where we'd be now- Standing up to defend what our forefathers have fought for, and fighting for, and taking care of AMERICA FIRST, then maybe help our allies- not helping countries that DESPISE us with money we dont have. Getting off track- my bad:fie:

BO will be by far the worst president ever, Carter #2. Bush cant be blamed for everything. Bush did not exponentially raise the natonal debt in only 2 months. Bush did not piss off and insult one of our biggest allies. Bush did not hand pick the most corrupt staff ever. Bush didint unconstitutionally appoint Hillary. Bush wasnt for giving illegal aliens, or terrorists, American Citizenship. Bush didnt tell the Feds to make it difficult or illegal to arrest and deport illegals...and all in only 2 months. No one could ever reach BOs level of incompetence. BO promised CHANGE, and people bought it hook, line & sinker! and what are we getting? Change- for the worst! He passes a Stimulus package that he says he never read- even though he campaigned he would be reading line for line. He appeared on Jay Leno, and even managed to screw that up, instead of doing his "job" as President. He's more worried about his image than he is of saving our great naton. Give, give ,give- and then print some more money. The only reason AIG got bailed out is because they insure the Federal Pension Plan! AIG isnt even a bank, but they got bailed out. This government isnt about the people, by the people, or for the people- THEY ARE FOR THEMSELVES! If a business failed- it was due to their own incompetence, but yet they get more money- why dodnt they give every American taxpayer a check? We the people didnt get a say, did we- NO. They gave the money to people who FAILED, not the proud, hard working , God fearing Americans that are desperately struggling to survive! They keep dumping dollars on the lazy, the incompetent, the failures, the illegals. They keep coming up with new taxes when they run out of money, and then they put taxes on the taxes! All to support themselves (gubmint) and the lazy asses that wants their free s&#t! Pelosi has to be the biggest bafoon in world history! Ironic that the nationally recognized symbol of the Democrat is the jackass! (OK, donkey) but really- whats the difference? If only the human (donkeys) couldnt reproduce- this great country might still be the greatest country on Gods green earth! Now we're turning into a 3rd world socialist dumping ground. whoa- did i get off track... and this is a gun site! Damn socialists- see what they made me do

American cowboys

Bush may come across as a bit daft, but let me tell you this, he has done everything he had said he'd do. When THE WORLD said we need to go after terrorists, we went, when lesser leaders would have conceded, he stuck to his guns, when the war became unpopular(can you believe that bullshit), he said "we will not falter, we will not fail". W has caught so much flack for simply doing what he said he'd do. Let's see BO do that!!! To all the sniveling, whining communist (democrat)sympathizers out there, we are the Greatest Nation because of cowboys just like G.W. Bush, if I could vote for him again I'd do it.

I believe Bush did the best he could with the hand he was dealt. I think the 1st stimulus package and all that follow are a huge mistake.

As for Mexico, why don't we just secure the border? How about a border fence? Naw, this idea is probably just a pipe dream.

danmitch, slow down...

Bush did not piss off and insult one of our biggest allies.
Umm, yes he did. And the rest of the world. The same world we have to rely on when we are overseas and depend on them in part for our safety.
Bush did not hand pick the most corrupt staff ever. Right, he just let his own staff BECOME the most corrupt staff ever.
Bush didint unconstitutionally appoint Hillary. Umm, Check your law books, not websites.
Bush wasnt for giving illegal aliens, or terrorists, American Citizenship. Yes he was. He was taking steps to do something similar in Texas.
Texans stopped him.Bush didnt tell the Feds to make it difficult or illegal to arrest and deport illegals. No, he just told them to forget about constitutional law.
slow down and think, dude.

Trying to get back on topic........

I personnally worked on, and along, the US - Mexican border as a military member of Operation Jumpstart. Operation Jump Start - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :neo:

I was assigned to areas south and west of Tucson Arizona to include Nogales, AZ and the Tohono O'odaham Indian Nation area near Sells, AZ. :moil:

I can tell you what the media won't, Mexican migrant workers should not be your biggest fear. In fact Mexicans are not the only people coming into our country without our knowledge or blessing. A LOT of the people crosing are from other more southern countries of South America, they are also from China and various other areas of the Middle East.

Of the people the Border Patrol were able to catch (the military was not allowed to put hands on anybody), they included people wanted (by both countries) for murder, rape, child molestation, spouse abuse, assaulting police officers, drug smuggling, human smuggling, and on, and on, and on.

Don't forget crossings occur in both directions. All of that money earned by migrant workers and the illeagal drug/human smuggling community, is going to Mexico. All of the pick-up trucks and SUVs owned by Americans that are stolen every few minutes, are going to Mexico to transport the drugs and humans back to the US.

The amount of trucks and people that are crossing is in the high hundreds every single night. Drugs are transported by 20 -25 personnel carrying 50lb packs of marijuana on their backs accompanied by armed escorts. The US stolen vehicles are PACKED from top to bottom and front to back with pot and other drugs.

Border patrol is fighting a war more important that Iraq or Afghanistan without the manpower or tools neccessary to accomplish the task. I have personally seen the ONE Border Patrol Agent assigned to his three miles or so of patrol area (yes they are that spread out or even further) go after a group of 20 or so in one direction while another group of 20 or more run across in the other. There are videos that the Border Patrol has that it will not release to the public showing HUNDREDS jumping the fences in one 300 yard area and running into the US while a handful of BP Agents try in futility to stop them.

In your home you like to have people come to the front door and request entrance. We do not know who is coming acrooss the Border (through our windows and back door). We need to seal BOTH the NORTHERN and SOUTHERN borders. :stop:

Operation Jumpstart was terminated because we (the US) did not have the money to continue to fund it because we are sending all our money overseas. All of our manpower is over there as well.

I can tell you more but I'm getting tired of typing. :lazy2:

There is a group of Americans that have been trying to do something about it.

I agree. I have said many times that it makes no sense to poor money and man power to fight a war in the middle east and do nothing to protect our borders. Perhaps like so much that has happened over the years the war on terror is just a sham.

If you've been reading the news you know that the Iraqi Prime Minister said that the US will withdraw from Iraq on a timetable determined by the IRAQI government.
