NYS What A Joke!!!

So, as I have posted recently, my girlfriend just got her pistol permit and bought a new gun. Well she finally gets a chance to go down to the pistol permit office today (Erie County) to have it put on her permit so that she can pick it up. I was with her so I figured I would have the gun co-registered on my permit as well, WRONG!! The guy at the permit office says that I have to have a NICS check done to even co-register the gun. So whatever, I'll go have it done. Well I go to Buffalo Gun Center so that my girlfriend can pick up her new gun and I can have the NICS ran, but Gun Center doesn't offer that service. So I go to the SWAT Store who said they would run the NCIS check, but would have to look into exactly how to do it because the gun isn't being sold. Since the gun wasn't being sold they were unsure how to run it so that their records would be correct when the ATF audits their transactions. The SWAT Store calls the ATF and they say they are not sure as this is a NYS thing not a federal thing and the ATF agent will have to check with their superiors and get back to us. The SWAT Store also calls the permit office is also unable to answer any questions. So at this time my girlfriend and I are unable to co-register any of our firearms, this state is ridiculous.

Is there a significant reason to co-register because it sounds like far more trouble than it is worth.

In Rensselaer county, the permit clerk runs a check when you add a gun to your permit. You're right though, NY is not about making things easy.

Thanks for posting this. I was going to co-register my glock when my fiance gets her permit so that we can take our time and save for her gun. Maybe not...? Let us know how it plays out.

Well when she 1st got her permit I went down there with her and she co-registered 5 of my guns and we were going to co-register the rest of mine on hers and her 1 on mine today (only did 5 because if you add 5 or less when you pick up your permit you get it that day, but if you add more than 5 you have to wait to receive it in the mail). They didn't give us an issue with me co-registering mine on hers when she just got her permit, so you may be okay.

Plenty of reason, I want them co-registered in case I want to go shoot hers or her shoot mine without the other person there, in case she wants to CC mine or me CC hers, or if I ever want to meet up with her after work at the range she can just bring them herself.

I live inSteuben County. The NIC check is done against the buyer. The county pistol clerk just adds my wife and charges the amendment fee. She doesn't get a NIC.

co-registration eliminates the awkward procedures after the death of an owner...unless the weapon is evidence...

In the event of the death of the person who has the gun on his/her permit, the other could retain it with no problem. Without coregistering, the gun has to be processed again through an FFL and NiICS check, then assigned to the survivor, and he/she has to go get it one his/her permit. Coregistering is optimal.
Also, both of you can shoot and carry the other's guns legally.
