NYS Assembly Passes Bill to Require Microstamping of Semiautomatic Handguns

interesting, i'd have no problem with this, as long as it would not somehow put re manufactured ammo makers out of business.... don't feel like paying retail prices for plinking/practice ammo.

"...it will also deter illegal gun traffickers from supplying violent criminals with weapons."

Exactly how is that supposed to work?

So, gun dealers in New York State will no longer sell semi-automatic weapons. Of course, that wouldn't prohibit anyone from going outside the state and buying one. Sure. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Handgun purchases have to go through a licensed dealer in order to bring one into NY state legally, so I'm sure the micro stamp requirement would be in effect. I don't feel that the micro stamp process will solve any more crimes than the ballistic library did. That would be zero in 18 years. It will not deter any person who wants to defeat it, people are just too creative at times.

Let's require the cops to carry them first since they are more likely to use a lawful gun. See how many cops stop supporting this new technolog.

Curious as to what technology they have that can micro stamp casings as a semi automatic is fired...they seem sure it will have minimal costs to manufacturers, but I gave not seen actual technology that can do such a thing. Who is going to cough up the money to r&d the tech to actually do what they want?

As others have stated, waste of time, money, and effort considering how easy it is to drive to another state, or say use a revolver.

Apparently, the "patented" process has a "serial number" engraved on the firing pin to leave an identifiable mark on the case. Or supposedly on the primer any way. I guess they think that the criminal element never heard of a file, or replacing a firing pin. This could be a real benefit to some more firearms friendly state, because both Remington and Kimber have said they will "reconsider" their commitment to doing business in NY if this was to be passed. 99% of the support for the bill comes from within 50 miles of New York city, the rest of us are not so big on the idea.

It is estimated that the cost of firearms will increase by about $200 dollars a gun. The government claims it will only raise the cost by about $12, but seriously, who believes anything they say. They spent over $40 million dollars on the COBIS system that solved a total of 0 crimes. In fact COBIS was defunded in the last budget due to it's failure. So, the government just transfered that $40 million dollar cost on to the industry and the consumer. I would encuarage those manufactures in NY to final pack up and leave for a more friendly business climate.

The arguments against the bill were excellent. The arguments for the bill were pathetic and weak.
Didn't matter, the dems followed their leader and voted for the bill.

There's something that these liars are not mentioning, but really sux (beyond the obvious) with regard to this MicroStamping BS. As of this past March, the bill explicitly states that "microstamp-ready" firearms must put unique codes on spent cartridge cases on at least TWO (2) places. That's right, 2 locations, the firing pin being one. Where in the name of God's good green earth would the other one be ? The only place to make the second marking is inside the chamber when the round is fired. This would make it difficult, if not impossible, for a gun to function properly. IMO, the political hacks calling for this nonsense know that, for NYS anyway, it would be the end of semi-auto handguns. Then what would be next ? Semi-auto rifles ? Semi-auto shotguns ?

.

Yeah glad I own a revolver lol. I can't understand for the life of me if your going to commit murders why forget use a semi auto ? It spits the fingerprinted shells out .... SMH

I agree with Wolf. Criminals will simply find ways to police their brass or use revolvers.
I don't know how the real technology works, but if the relevant information was engraved just around the firing pin hole in such a manner that it stamps the back end of the cartridge as the round is chambered... That might work.

Stamping inside the chamber could be done. A Code engraved inside the chamber wouldn't prevent function. As the round is fired, the casing will expand and "fill in" the engraving leaving a ghost image on the side of the casing. Again, I don't know how they plan to do it, but this could work...

Oh wait! Nanites! A batch of nanites in the gun sit waiting for a round to enter the chamber, then they run out and carve the code...No wait, what planet is this? LOL
