NY permit holder looking to add other states

I have had my NY CCW permit for a while now, and am looking to add more "coverage"
I travel alot, and might be moving to colorado soon, so I am researching other states non resident permits to add to it.

I looked at utah, and florida, those are the most popular of course, but what other states are good too? Price wise and renewal time frame.

Depends on where you plan to travel. Best bang for the buck would be the Floida one as that gives you, I believe, around 30 States. I think they have new rules for the Utah non-resident now that makes it more difficult.

I live in NY and have that CCW and then added PA and CT. Then got the Florida one and don't need the PA one renewed now as that's included in the FL. We travel more on the east than west coast, so the Florida one made more sense.

I have New York. I added PA (if you go to PA, get one there as the Philadelphia PD will only honor a PA permit even though that action is against the law, you don't need the hassle). I added VA, FL, CT, NH, ME, MA and NV. While VA, PA and FL are redundant in many states, I didn't want to bother chasing changing reciprocity laws if they indeed change.

This leaves RI, NJ, MD, SC, OR, CA, WI, IL and DC as the non-carry states. This us the best you can do with a NY CCW. RI, MD and NJ state they are
May issue to non-residents but they do not issue. CO and SC are resident reciprocity issues as is OR that can't be resolved. WI is coming around but still not there and the last three (IL, CA and DC) are communist states that we can forget trying in. (Yes, I know DC isn't a state before someone points that out).

The only suggestion on top of this is to get a NJ FID card as this will let you possess your gun but not carry it in NJ. You can then fly out of Newark legally with the weapon as the NYC airports are off limits. It is easy to get a FID card as a non resident of NJ, but it will take 6 months and a few hundred bucks.

So how much do you pay to renew all those permits and how often?

Arizona will get you almost identical coverage to FL at about half the cost. It is $60 for initial 5 yrs and $43 for renewals. Your NY permit will suffice for the training requirement, you can get it thru the mail with turn around time averaging about 2 weeks.

I didn't realize MA issued non resident permits, but i was interested. But looking it up i see that its 100 bucks a year. Not worth it for my 1 or 2 trips a year. I have my NY permit and rarely leave the state as it is, so paying for permits and renewing all the time isn't worht the hassle for me.

NH is a good one - gives you 13 more states, is cheap, can apply by mail, good for four years and only takes 4-5 weeks to secure.

I've got a NH permit, which for me is good since I got to NH, but for an NY resident you leave a big gap on the east coast. FL still the best bet if you go up and down 95 a lot. You would THINK the east coast commie states (MA,NY,NJ,MD) would at least have reciprocity with each other if nobody else.

It costs a good bit. MA is $100 per year and the others are renewed every 4 or 5 years and range from a low of $35 to a high of $90 each. Not bad. I figured it out and it's about $225 per year to carry. Not as cheap as driving, but it is worth it IMHO. It's critical to take advantage of opportunities to exercise my right to a firearm in as many states as possible, lest the right be denied. If more were available by mail, I would apply as the more who apply, the harder it is to remove the programs as they are vital revenue streams for the issuing entities. I am lucky enough to be able to afford this and "contribute" to the cause in this way.

Ma ltc

I got my MA LTC a couple of months ago and the expiration is 2017.

So I think the above comments are correct with the $100 fee but it is not yearly.

At least that is the way I am reading it.

Non-Res is yearly. But it works out better that way since most non-res get a T&H restriction on the first go around. Curiosity, is this your first LTC and is is restricted?

Re: non-res that makes sense.

Yes this is my first LTC, class A no restrictions.

Thanks
Jim

I got ahold of the Arizona office and they stated my NY permit is not enough on its own for a non rez permit. I need an acceptable training class.
SO, I am taking the NRA pistol class this weekend, which is acceptable and mailing my app in monday.

Anyone know what the gun laws are for Illinois if I happen to drive through on my way west?

Although you failed to fill out your profile your apparently a MA resident.

MA Resident LTC $100 valid for 6 years
MA Non-Resident LTC $100 valid for 1 year

Didn't you take an NRA approved class for your current permit? Unless AZ has an in state only BS rule like MA does you can send in the same cert. Please fill out your profile I'm going on the assumption that your a NY resident due to the NY permit.

Ya, 100% no CCW. Travel per FOPA, Locked Up, Unloaded, Inaccessible. Get through that state and don't stop if you don't have to!

The gun laws in Illinoisistan are only slightly less restrictive than those in mainland China. Follow federal transport laws to the letter if you are transporting a handgun, especially in the Chicago metro area and do not make any unnecessary stops. The local police will most likely be less educated than the State Police so it wouldn't hurt to carry a copy of the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, especially the Safe Passage Provision contained therein. It states, in part, to keep the Firearm in a locked case other than the glove compartment or console with the ammunition stored in a separate container, both of which must be inaccessible from the passenger compartment. If in an SUV or other vehicle that does not have a trunk, it must be out of reach of the occupants. Do not have any ammunition on your person or within your reach or you may be in violation.

I was surprised to hear that too. It seems that NY Penal 400.00 only requires residents of Westchester County to have training to obtain a permit. Go figure.

FOPA does not require separation of ammo from firearm.

Makes sense now that I think about it, why require training to own something you can never carry or use
