Whoa, big guy. I can understand some folks being intensely anti-NRA for several reasons. Lord knows I have some of my own. I was simply posting the NRA-ILA link as it was a page that allows you (member, or not) to easily send communications to all of your representatives with the input of your zip code. My intent was NOT some nefarious attempt to recruit new members to the NRA. I, too, am in my mid-fifties, and have a few curmudgeonly old fart attitudes as well. I've earned them, as have we all. My apologies if my attempt to spur some folks beyond the comfort of carping about a problem with representation on a forum to do something constructive with their time, offended you. Oi vey!
No biggie. Wasn't "offended," just a bit frustrated with how every single plea to get folks involved around here includes a tie-in with the NRA. There are at least two other threads (thankfully, they're finally winding down now) where anyone who expressed any umm...."curmudgeonly old fart attitudes" (LOL - good one, guilty as charged!) about the NRA was greeted with intentionally offensive answers, at least from the more vocal and prolific couple or three NRA "spokespeople" (and I use the word extremely loosely).
Whether it's through the NRA-ILA site, or GOA's site, or just through the Senate and House sites directly, of course, everyone should be writing now. No argument at all from me on that. The only suggestion that I would offer is that email should be only a follow-up method of getting your message(s) to them. Phone calls and snail-mail should also be. The primary way to make them hear you is to go to where they are whenever you can, and express your concerns face-to-face. It's more difficult with Senators unless you live near where their home-state offices are, but House members usually have an office in the district they ostensibly "represent" (as if!), and appointments can be made, or some will allow walk-ins if they have the time. The last two times I went to my Rep's office, when I walked in he said, "So Mr. Blues, whatcha got for me today?" He knows my name and knows that I will come with material for him to review on whatever subject I'm going to hit him with on any given day. I also call in to the local talk radio show whenever he's a guest, and the last time he said, "Didn't you and I talk about this in my office recently?" Yup, that was me, but now that I have you where all of North Alabama can hear your answer, what's your answer? Also, a follow-up email or snail-mail with the Subject Line of "Per Our Conversation on such-and-such a date..." is a heck of a lot more likely to get read than one where you can't reference a previous contact.
Anyway, that's all I was trying to get at. Not only is the NRA's website not the only way, it's not even the most effective way to communicate with your elected officials. Sorry if it was too curmudgeonly old fartish. I'll try to be the kindly ol' Southern gentleman next time.
