I would like to teach a Utah or Florida course as my Wisconsin Concealed carrycourse. What is the general thought on what state is prefered to teach. I understand that I would need to go to Utah for the training, but not sure about Florida. I am just looking for opinions from the instructor community.

Thanks, SDTA

In order to get a Florida concealed carry license a person just needs to take an 8 hour NRA certified shooting class and send in their certificate along with a finger print card and picture, there is no classroom time on Florida law at all so you're basically already doing that, you just need to order the packets from Florida for your students if you want to market the class as a Florida CCW class. Utah is a 3 to 4 hour class, with no live fire, on gun safety and Utah law. I'm not an instructor but i have both licenses.

@JKing67 is correct. I hold both too. Personally I don't think you should market the course as a Florida certification class. You would need to do more than just teach the Basic NRA class and then which certificate would you give out? Both the NRA Basic and the Florida ( which does not exist )?

Here's a link to what you need to do to teach the Utah class:

The basic NRA certificate is all i sent in for Florida, there actually is no "Florida CCW class" they just want proof you completed a NRA certified class with live fire. Anyone can order the packets from Florida for free, so you could either order some for your students or let them know how to get them. You know what really sucks, having Florida and Utah in my wallet and living in ILLINOIS!!! I do travel alot though, so they're nice to have when i hit state line.

I am an WI NRA instructor and UT CFP instructor. I teach carry courses for both WI and Utah. For the WI students, its regular NRA training certificates, either Basic Pistol or Pistol First Steps.

For students seeking a Utah CFP, you must stamp their application with your unique red Utah instructor stamp. This certifies they were taught the specific Utah course. No other certificate is required to apply for Utah. WI residents must have a WI CWL and send in a copy with the Utah application.

For students seeking a FL CWL, students can use the NRA certificate as proof of training. From the FL website "You must be able to provide a CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION from a firearms training class or other acceptable training document that evidences your competency with a firearm." FL does not require non-resident applicants to possess their own state's CWL.

I don't advertise the FL option but mention it in class. The best reason for WI residents to get Utah as a secondary permit is Minnesota does not recognize a CWL from FL or WI. But MN does recognize UT.
