NRA Announcement Just Off The Wires

It's just came across the news wires that the NRA has proposed posting an armed Police Office in every school in the country. I'm glad to see everyone trying to catch up with our local school district where that's been done at least at the high schools and middle schools since 1997!

From my ISP FYI:

The National Rifle Association broke its silence on last week's shooting rampage at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 children and staff dead.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," the group's top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said at a Washington news conference.

LaPierre said "the next Adam Lanza," the man responsible for last week's mayhem, is planning an attack on another school.

"How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame from a national media machine that rewards them with wall-to-wall attention and a sense of identity that they crave, while provoking others to try to make their mark," LaPierre said. "A dozen more killers, a hundred more? How can we possibly even guess how many, given our nation's refusal to create an active national database of the mentally ill?"

He blamed video games, movies and music videos for exposing children to a violent culture day in and day out. "In a race to the bottom, many conglomerates compete with one another to shock, violate, and offend every standard of civilized society, by bringing an even more toxic mix of reckless behavior and criminal cruelty right into our homes," LaPierre said.

He refused to take any questions after speaking. Though security was tight, two protesters were able to interrupt LaPierre's speech, holding up signs that blamed the NRA for killing children. Both were escorted out, shouting that guns in schools are not the answer.

LaPierre announced that former Rep. Asa Hutchison, R-Ark., will lead an NRA program that will develop a model security plan for schools that relies on armed volunteers.

The 4.3 million-member NRA largely disappeared from public debate after the shootings in Newtown, Conn., choosing atypical silence as a strategy as the nation sought answers after the rampage. The NRA temporarily took down its Facebook page and kept quiet on Twitter.

Since the slayings, President Barack Obama has demanded "real action, right now" against U.S. gun violence and called on the NRA to join the effort. Moving quickly after several congressional gun-rights supporters said they would consider new legislation to control firearms, the president said this week he wants proposals to reduce gun violence that he can take to Congress by January.

Obama has already asked Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and pass legislation that would stop people from purchasing firearms from private sellers without a background check. Obama also has indicated he wants Congress to pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity magazines.

I seen it and it seems good, but I wish they would keep my relaxing violent video games out of this (bait and switch) I have been playing GTA since the first one on playstation and I have never killed anyone.

I agree with you there! I would rather have people shooting "digital people" than real people all day long and twice on Sunday! I've inherieted my sons old PS2 and have kept several of their arial war games which I play all the time, but I ain't shot down or blown up any airplanes either. But I can sure as h*ll blast them digital jets outa' the sky! If that makes me a violencemonger, pffffflaaaaatttttttt on them!

Yea, but your (probably) an adult. I tend to agree that the violent exposure that todays KIDS are getting is an issue, especially for the unstable ones that cant connect with reality. I also blame the media for the sensationalism they cram into everything.

I agree with you but that is bad parenting issue not the video games fault right on the box it says 18+

Edit to add: I started playing doom at a very young age (thanks dad) but it was explained to me that it was a game and I was taught right and wrong that is a rare thing these days in parenting. But I still believe I turned out ok.

Since gun free zones were setup years ago, most every state and federal building I have been to has an armed, vigilant officer just inside the main entrances to those buildings. How arrogant of our government to not do the same for schools at the same time.

Reason? Not enough traffic in and out of schools nationwide. The risk to our kids was assessed and deemed not important enough to fund such protection.

The blame game is ridiculous. All I've heard from antis are divisive, unreasonable, ignorant rants (including death threats) which blame everyone with guns who want to protect their families, blame on the NRA, blame on the gun owners in America no matter for hunting, target, clay, whatever.

This proposal will be villified in the press. It does nothing to satiate the antis ignorant beliefs/rants...nothing.

The press is going to have a 1-sided field day with this press conference, followed by the ignorant rants of politicians, actors, and antis.

It looks like we will be fighting for our rights in the political trough of legislation, I hope everyone may have enough time, when time to act, starting now.

The fact that two protestors came in with signs proves how stupid the no gun signs are, ban free speech. And once again tell me where in the 2nd Amendment it says anything about hunting to type of weapon you may have.

You can place armed guards in schools but that isn't going to be much of a solution if we don't get at the root of the cancer causing the problem. Stopping the destruction of society, the cheapening of life, the lack of personal responsibility. We are a republic founded on laws. Laws that are being ignore because of political correctness. The laws are there to protect our society as a whole. They are not there to protect some special interest. We have lost our soul. Guns or no guns, punishing law abiding citizens will not stop these tragedies in the future.

DOOM, DukeNukem... YUP, Im with ya. I admit I also let my kid play 18+ games. He is also in an NRA Marksman's class, hunts, and knows the difference between a game, a target and a living creature.

I forgot all about dukenukem, oh how i loved the pipe bombs.

So, criminals use guns in mass shootings and the solution is to restrict my ability to defend myself as a law abiding citizen? That is sound logic if you are a collectivest. Remember in the Soviet Union when one person in the community broke the law the enforcers punished other innocent, selected individuals as well?

I also grew up playing video games, but if I had to choose between the two I would never play again.

I think this says it best. You may not agree with the messenger but the message is correct...

I for one feel like Wayne LaPierre has just thrown me under a bus - Since I have been playing video games and watching violent movies since I was young myself. (34 now)

Man it sounded like those old time thoughts on banning rock music I have heard about (How the devil influences kids who listen to rock music)

The BLAME does not lay with "games" or "music" or "movies" even "fashion" - the blame lies solely on the nut-job that commits the act.. Sure there can be a history of abuse, or neglect or any number of things - But not all people who have been abused, or neglected or whatever have picked up weapons and committed acts of insanity.

I don't follow "god" or the "bible" mostly because I have seen and read too much history of violence committed in "gods" name. So religion is not an answer to me - but I do believe in the golden rule - Do unto others as you have them do unto you. More strongly now then anytime in my life. (more so after some bad experiences)

If people want to point fingers, and lay blame.. Point them at themselves for not properly acting around their fellow people. If they act against their fellow man/women - then they themselves would not want happen to them, then blame should sit on their shoulders.

I was going to donate to NRA a little of my income, what I could, or rejoin again. But after this - I seriously dont know if its worth it, as my past times of gaming, and watching movies has just been said to have caused such a horrific yet preventable tragedy..

Yes all these "gun free zone" tragedy could have been prevented, had they 1) not existed in first place, and then honest, law abiding citizens been armed. 2) had armed officers stationed their to begin with.
