I DOUBT IT

As a lifelong musician, I have a very old habit of careful listening and parsing of sounds which come into my ear - including things which resonate in my "mind's ear", like writing. I was reading the Buckeye Firearm News when I noticed this edition's "Gun Quote", which reads:

"The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms." - Samuel Adams

Of course, as with all words coming from politicians it cannot ever be trusted at face value: it says one thing sort of plainly (people can keep their own arms), but puts a hidden qualifier in plain sight: this only applies to those people "who are peaceable citizens". Good luck getting to be on the panel that decides what is the meaning of "peaceable citizens".

I think it's pretty easy.

No convictions for robbery, violence, person-on-person crime, domestic, psychiatric disability, child abuse, felony drug possession.

I doubt if any of our Founding Fathers could have ever imagined how far from their ideals our politicians over the last century, and especially the current crop would willingly take our Republic. The great minds that developed our form of government debated all variety of governments before setting up the Confederation as our central government, a loose confederation of states. It was important to them to limit the power of the central government after the excesses of the monarchy.
Soon, It became obvious in the mostly agricultural country after the Revolution, a stronger central government was necessary for the country to survive. This was the thought behind the Constitution by our Founders, thus the Constitution was created. However, many states were afraid of a powerful central government. They were not content with the lack of protection or immunity for individuals against a potentially tyrannical government such as the one they threw off in England. They demanded amendments to guarantee these basic rights that were deprived under the monarchy. Twelve amendments were created and submitted to the states. All but two (setting the constituencies for each congressman and setting Congressional pay) were approved and became known as the Bill Of Rights, Amendments #1 TO #10. They knew basic rights had to become a part of the Constitution to guarantee Government could not deprive citizens of their rights. Samuel Adams, as well as many other Founders felt strongly that citizens had a basic right to own firearms for protection, from tyranny as well as from predators as they had lived under tyranny. Few politicians of that day would want to deny the right to bear arms.
Only the "ruling elites" we have today that spend their entire career as a politician, would turn the reasoning 180 degrees and think the government would need protection from the "tyranny" of armed citizens. We are on the verge of being ruled by a government that wants absolute power over the citizens, much as the monarchy had over the 18th century American colonies. The politicians have systematically changed the government's power, even touting the Constitution as a "living" document that, essentially means whatever the politicians want it to say. This is wrong! We have to continue returning this country to the principles upon which it was founded and to the original democratic republic our Founders gave us. If we don't, the USA will be no more than a second rate country. This election will decide if we will have a government ruled by law or by men, a republic or a socialist state. I know what I choose!

Actually, I was referring to the rampant governmental habit of creatively re-defining their terminology for political expedience and not bothering to tell the rest of us. Sure, we the people know what we mean when we say "peaceable citizens", but that doesn't necessarily mean what they mean when they say it.

True. They change definitions more times than Lindsay Lohan changes lawyers.
