~The Dude Abides~
NORTH PORT, Fla. - Michelle Horton says the intruder who broke into her Gailbreath Road home got two warnings before she opened fire. "He was looking at me, facing dead-on. I said, 'I will shoot you,'" Horton says.
The North Port mother & nurse was sleeping at home on Tuesday morning with her two sons, when the familys dog woke her up. Horton says she left the bedroom and then came face-to-face with the burglar.
"I really wasn't worried about myself. I was worried about the two kids. That's all I was worried about," Horton says.
Horton went and got her gun, then followed the man into the backyard. She says another man was waiting outside, crouching in the bushes. She says the man in the bushes took off when he saw the gun, but other wouldn't leave. Horton says she aimed for his leg and fired.
"I know a lot of women say, 'Oh no, I'm too scared to shoot him.' But when you're threatened, you won't be scared," Horton says. The man then limped away, but not before she got a good look at him.
