North Carolina Veteran PTSD

Im a veteran that has been diagnosed with PTSD. Im wanting to take the Carry and coceal course here in NC. I know that North Carolina does a Mental health background check and im afraid that my application will be denied. I dont want to pay all this money for the class and application only to be denied. Does anyone here have any insight on this issue.

First of all, welcome to the site! PTSD by itself is not a disqualifier. You must adjudicated as mentally ill or have been involuntarily confined to a mental institution to be denied your rights.

In NC, you sign a "universal" document authorizing any mental health facility to release any records.

But as a matter of practice, many mental health facilities simply don't repond to the request. That's actually the justification that the sherriffs of some counties use to justify taking teh full 90 days they are allowed to issue a permit. They say they are waiting for info from mental health providers, but the counties are obligated to adhere to the 90 day requirement, even if no response is recieved.

In my county, they only send the request to one agency, and my understanding is that agency doesn't respond, as a matter of policy.

Sorry, I don't like this suggestion - if it is discovered that one is lying on the application they are toast. And while the initial application may fly, the Grand Jury investigating the incident won't.

I understand. I really just dont want to be victimized for being a vet.

Maybe it's different in NC than where I live. Here as long as you provide a copy of your DD214 or military ID card you can save the money on the conceled carry class. Your military experience is/was your firearms training.

You'll likely have to do what I'm doing right now. I've been in therapy for OCD, AHDH, social avoidance, etc. Because I copped to that, I was denied my Indiana lifetime license. I've been to see a pshrink last week and he's agreed to right me a letter addressed to the local officer in charge of the personal protection permit process, et al. so that he'll approve my licensure. I fully expect to be approved this time, and since it's a lifetime license, I'll never have to deal with this tihs again.

I am faced with the same issue...I think Reds info is spot on. I have PTSD and I am hoping that "THE MAN" doesnt try to take away our rights to carry because of PTSD. I bet if we say we want to re-up...they will jump at the chance to put an M-4 back in our hands.
