Noob Shotgun Question

I know I can shoot any type of shot from my shotgun, a Webley & Scott tactical. However, it has a screw-in choke which extends out of the front into a sawtooth breaching tip.

My question is, I'm pretty sure that just about any shotgun can shoot shot - but can that same gun shoot slugs, or do I have to have a special TYPE of shotgun? Or a special choke? Or am I asking the wrong question?

Thanks for the help.

This should help:

Product Information
Hard-hitting, deer-dropping performance. Slightly oversized for great smooth-bore shotgun performance, resulting in better sealing against the barrel wall and more consistent shot-to-shot velocities.

Technical Information
Gauge/Bore: 12
Shell Length: 2-3/4"
Slug Type: Lead Rifled
Slug Weight: 1 oz

Ballistics Information:
Muzzle Velocity: 1560 fps

Notes:
Designed specifically for smooth bore barrels but can also be used in rifled choke tube barrels or fully rifled barrels

Look at the barrel. My Mossberg says right on it not for slugs. Some have a slight hour glass figure and could cause excessive pressure to build damaging the gun. Can see the shape of mine by following the sight rail down.

Chokes are designed to influence the pattern of shot, and are not necessary when shooting slugs. Chokes can impose limits on what types of shot you shoot dependent on the type of choke, shot material (lead/steel), and size of shot. Many shotgun manufacturers produce “slug barrels,” some rifled some not, specifically designed for shooting slugs. While many shotguns come with a barrel that can accommodate either shot or slugs, not all can, particularly if a fairly restrictive choke is built into the barrel. They will specifically state “not for use with slugs” in the owner’s manual, or often it is stamped on the barrel.
.
I was unable to determine specifically whether your gun is OK for slugs or not from the Webley & Scott website. I can’t imagine that a company would manufacture a “tactical” shotgun that couldn’t shoot slugs, but you never know. My guess would be your gun probably can safely accommodate slugs, but right now that’s just a guess. Carefully check what is stamped on the barrel and carefully read your owner’s manual. If you can’t determine the answer with certainty, go back and ask the dealer or ask a good gunsmith. Beware that the dealer who sold you the gun may not actually know any more about it than you do. Depends very much on the dealer.

If you plan to use slugs get a barrel designed for it. They will have rifling in them making them much more accurate...

As others have said check the barrel to see if it says, "NO SLUGS"....
Even if it does allow it, I would remove the choke....Otherwise you could have a really big bang...Not in a good way!

It sounds like the consensus is a big shrug. If that's the case, I want a defensive ammunition which will consistently go through car doors, glass, whatever. Slugs will go through everything. So, I'm thinking PDX will be the best ammo for SHTF, which is what I'm searching for.

Any other suggestions besides magnum-load 00 buck?

I heard there is such a thing as 000 buck, but can't find it.

If you wish to use slugs then you need one of two things:

- a rifled barrel Link Removed there will not be a choke with this barrel.

OR

- a rifled slug Link Removed do not use the choke with these slugs.

Do not use a rifled slug in a rifled barrel.

My recommendation would be to get the rifled barrel if you wish to shoot slug out of it and use the smooth bore if you wish to shoot shot.

000 buck exists it is uncommon though. Why the need for 3" or 3.5" 00 buck shot? No need to punish yourself for home defense, standard 2.75" will get the job done. Others to consider that may possibly be better are #1 and #4 buck shot for home or self defense but again are less common than 00. Every once in a while Midway USA has some in stock. For a SHTF scenario any mfr will be sufficient.

Not so much a big shrug as it was fairly clearly summed up to check your equipment out and be sure before you start trying to put slugs through it. If it is OK for slugs, you should remove the choke before using them. PDX ammo IS slug ammo.

From someone who doesn't know if their smooth bored barrel can shoot slugs or not... your dismissive attitude that the rest of the forum just shrugged and couldn't answer your question is a bit off-putting.

There is a lot of good information in this thread that indeed answers your original question.

Since you changed your question to, what's the best round out of my shotgun to shoot through doors, I'm going to leave you with this: look it up on the Internet.
