Non resident LTC/CCW

My brother lives in Florida and I in Massachusetts and he keeps telling me how limited I am in Mass due to their stringent laws and it's true, but it got me to thinking and I am SURE I am not the first to think of it. So bare with me!

Being that Florida is a "Shall Issue" state to both residents and non-residents, does that mean I can apply for a Florida CCW as well and have a permit for both states and be able to enjoy the same freedoms he does when I am OUTSIDE of Massachusetts?

Or does "non-residents" mean more like snowbirds who actually live there but for only X months per year?

I have both a Florida and a Utah permits and I live in Missouri...so yes you can apply for a Florida permit even though you live in what??? Romney country? Sorry...can't help that last one...I can be :bad: sometimes...And oh Florida permit will come as quick as a blink of a week or two if your papers are OK...I got mine within a thin hairline of two weeks after submission.

Do you remember how much it cost for the permit? Is there a picture on it and if so, how does it get there if you live in Missouri?

And FWIW, I am originally from Arkansas and will NOT be staying here. This place sucks and not just because of their gun laws. Hell, I think their gun laws are almost bearable....it's EVERYTHING ELSE!

You can apply for your Florida CCW and enjoy the freedom to carry in approximately 36 other states, of course, within the guidelines of the state's laws that you are carrying in. Florida does not state resident or non-resident on their permits, but does print your address so be sure not to carry where Florida Residents Only are recognized (MI, SC, CO and NH to the best of my recollection). This will allow you, with your MA permit, approximately 35 states that you can carry in.

Before you carry in another state, you should remember the three most important rules for carrying in that state. They are (in order):

1) Check the laws of the state you are going to carry in before you carry there.
2) Check the laws of the state you are going to carry in before you carry there.
3) Check the laws of the state you are going to carry in before you carry there.

Look up the statutes yourself and do not rely on websites or opinions on the internet, even the NRA, or on handheld smartphone apps, as almost every site has errors or opinions that may lead you into a jail cell. I would check both the carry laws and the use of force laws.

Almost every state has restrictions on where is off limits and whether or not you must inform LEO, the legality of no-gun signs, etc. You also need to check if transport or possession is legal, and how it must be transported, in the states that do not honor your permit(s). And, oh yeah, stay out of New York with a handgun if you have no permit in NY. They don't play by the rules in the southern tier of the state.

Past that - Carry On!

It's been 4 years ago now...I think it is a little bit over a hundred bucks, I am guessing about $115? For a 5year permit, it's not too bad...I applied for it by asking for the packet from online. Check with my instructor who is also a Florida/Utah instructor, then I was sent a packet to fill up and all the requirements that went with it, run around got it including my fingerprint specimens and when it came back, yes...it is a picture ID. The size of the photo is the same size as the required size for a passport if you have ever applied for a passport...

I appreciate your response and candor but yes, I will be looking it up myself. I'm new to carrying a weapon and am just looking for people's opinions and nothing more. I guess I am looking for opinions that will prompt me to look up other laws that I may have over-looked or not thought of. I'm such a newb that I have yet to carry mine as I feel it is a HUGE LEGAL responsibility and I just want to make sure my i's are dotted and t's are crossed before I do.

I honestly find the laws more intriguing than actually carrying a gun! Bizarre is the first thing that comes to mind.

Ooh that's good news. My Oregon permit came in eight calendar days... Florida got my app. on 12/31 so maybe I don't have much longer to wait. That's exciting.

Arizona covers the same states as florida except Washington state which you only get with Florida but arizona is only $60 and renewal is $43.

Fingerprints are only needed the 1st time and not for renewal!

I went Arizona instead of Florida

Arizona will also give you Nevada which Florida will not. I got both but still needed Utah to get Minnesota. If done right, you can get yourself up to 40 or 41 states quickly, depending on where your resident permit is. I still have no way to carry in SC, OR, CA, CO (residency issues), IL, DC (None available), or the Won't issue States of NJ, MD, RI and HI.

Permits I have are NY, CT, NH, MA, ME, PA, VA, FL, AZ, and UT. VA and PA are completely redundant but I spend a lot of time in both states, especially Philadelphia which keeps trying to not recognize outside permits, so I figured it was worth the extra few dollars not to get into a reciprocity conversation should I get stopped. Besides, both were very easy to get.

I think I'm maxed out at this point. I can't add any other states to the mix (not in permits but in carry privilege) and can't fit any more in my wallet. Renewal time is as much as a a mortgage payment, but it keeps some of the states happy as several on the list use it as a profit center.

How long is the expiry date for the Arizona one? Mine is 5 years for $115 (I think) and will be time to renew next year. My MO one is less than $100 and it only last 3 years...I don't mind playing the piano (fingerprinted) if it is necessary. Even for renewal.

Glad to see I'm not the only one playing the "how many states can we light up on the map" game. I have FL pending, and the next one I'd like is AZ just for Nevada. Its easier to apply from home here in Idaho than go to Nevada and take their training. Oregon was a breeze and came much faster than I was expecting.

Amen about the mortgage payment... but with states changing whom they do and don't accept in reciprocity from time to time, I'd rather the overlap than lose a state due to one of those agreement swaps.

Oregon is a can't have for me. Not in a bordering state. As for light up the map, I prefer to think of it a bingo. Still have those states that stand in the way. A lot of people play this game secretly, and I have yet to fly with a handgun but I drive all over the place with one. I hear that the flights, save NYC where you get diverted to a jail cell, are pretty easy if you follow the proper procedure. I'll find out in the summer. Going to Alaska. Need a gun, no way to drive one there.

I've been looking into the flight issue and recently ordered a TSA approved case online (Stack-On PC-650) to meet the requirements. My understanding is that you can have the ammo locked in the same case, but that the gun should be unloaded. Should be good to go.

I'm in Boise metro area, nearest Sheriff in Oregon (Malheur County) was only about 50 mins. drive away. They were super nice, didn't even ask why I wanted it (I had been told to expect some lip) and then I was shocked that it came in 8 days. I don't spend ANY time in NYC, NJ or IL so I don't expect much hassle. I do go to California from time to time, and I'll have to figure out how I want to handle that when the time comes, but obviously I wont put myself into any kind of situation where I could get arrested.
