Non-permitted carry in California

I work as a sales person (I don't sell or have valuables on me) who travels throughout California to the large cities. Many of the places are terrible full of gang bangers and dealers. The hotels are usually not nice. Plus, I dress formally for business. This alone is probably not a good enough cause to get a CCW permit (I have doubts). However, I constantly feel threatened and basically feel I'm rolling the dice and am eventually going to get assaulted or worse.

That said, my understanding is that with your own registered handgun, if you conceal without a permit, it's only a misdemeanor.

I also heard that now is a good time to get a CCW from Utah, etc. because the law may be changing.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this situation? What do you all think my best approach should be?

I lived in Los Angeles County for 37 years.
All I can say to you is this.

When seconds count the police are too many minutes away.

What county do you live in? What county do you work most in? You might be able to get a permit based on where you work as opposed to where you live if that's necessary.

If you live in a decent county that's as good as reason as any, I just got approved for my CCW for basically "Self Defense", but I live in one of the easiest counties to get one. There is also an exception to the law I was just reading today, that you may carry a concealed weapon without a permit if you fear for your life with due cause, but you better have a damn good lawyer! I assume atleast applying for a CCW permit, even of you get denied, would help build a case in your favor in that instance. I have to agree with The Outlaw, don't let yourself become a victim, above all, do what you need to do to stay safe.

Thanks for the advice. I'm in Riverside county. Part of my job is business development so I'm constantly attending networking events and trade shows in LA, San Francisco, San Diego, and Orange County. I also travel out of state. The worst area I've been in so far is San Francisco. Dealers, pimps, hookers, homeless and addicts for 5 blocks as I walk to my hotel in a suit and luggage. Unbelievable. Everyone above the poverty line is a target in those areas.

In any event, I'll keep thinking about what might be the best approach to this dilemma and keep the ideas coming.

Not trying to break the law I have my ccw but honestly get a ruger Lcp and a pocket holster keep it to your self don't bring it into certain places cops stations or schools no one would even notice

I agree with everyone here...stay safe.

I do find it interesting, that the guy who had a "friend" in florida that wanted to carry without a permit is getting his ass handed to him, being called a felon..but here, well...interesting :)...

I'm under the impression that the law in Florida regarding a non-permit conceal carry is different than in California. Maybe that is the reason. In California, if you carry a loaded firearm concealed but the gun is registered (and not a felon - though a felon wouldn't be able purchase anyways), it should only be a misdemeanor. That said, I think you would have to really manage a LEO encounter very carefully or I can see it jumping to a felony and then your pooched.

Frankly, I only have 2 needs for a conceal carry. One, traveling for business. Two, home defense. I don't worry about the later but it's the first one I am worried about. I might call riverside sheriff and ask the deputy what they think.

Ever think about relocating to another State? It's a shame to have to but the "Norm" isn't supposed to be in fear walking down the street.

Oh and FFchen, we all have choices. To be a law abiding citizen or not. NOT meaning any disrespect just saying.

Apply for the permit. If you get turned down appeal the decision. There is now a federal court decision that essentially says that self defense is a valid reason. The suit was against MD. Sorry I can't give more info but possibly someone else her can cite the case. Certainly your attorney can find it. If you get caught it could mean jail time which could cost you your job and even worse it could prevent you from receiving a permit. If some glory seeking prosecutor can drum up a felony then you lose your right to own a gun.

Gun or no gun five blocks in a bad neighborhood is a poor choice. Remember that you win every gun fight that you avoid. Take a taxi, drive your car, even a bus, though not my recommendation, is better than walking. Learn to minimize risk. I know you have to travel through bad areas but there are safer ways than walking.

Caribou,

I agree with what you said in the first paragraph. I'll definitely apply.

That said, I don't think there is much I could have done in that particular situation. That bad area was about 6 blocks long and 3 blocks wide and my hotel was smack in the middle. I didn't see any taxis going around in the area, actually. I did end up taking public transportation to the event. Of course, there are those who would also say that individuals shouldn't need to worry about the repercussions of arming themselves for self preservation in areas where lawlessness is rampant.

No disrespect taken :) grove brought up a good point about it being a different offense between FL and CA. It's all about our choices isn't it :) Like i said in my last post and my post to the FL "friend", your safety is more important than any piece of paper. Your choice man :)

Though, I do also agree with the mappow that you should move to another state! :)

From what I read, It's a Felony in FL. In CA it appears it's not. Here in VA it's a misdemeanor. I don't encourage people to break the law, But I misdemeanor charge is well worth staying alive. Especially since it won't DQ you if you did get one.

Commiefornia got it's name for a reason, I'm not calling you a liar, but that seems VERY suspect to me. I'd like to see this actual law referenced. Sounds like a good way to get thrown in jail lawyer or not. I can't see the same state that thinks bullet buttons protect people, having that big of a loophole in there ridiculously strict carry laws.

Since you travel all over the state, Why don't you move to a county that is a lot more CCW friendly like Sacramento County or others?

Riverside county is entirely possible to obtain a CCW in.
Not quite as easy as SB County, but do-able if you have a strong GC.
I attended an NRA function a couple weeks ago where both Riverside and SB County Sheriffs were in attendance, voicing their support for CCW.
Do it man, you got nothing to lose and everything to gain.
