The schools like to talk a good talk about their firm stances against bullying. They make a big deal of having the kids wear pink to school for International Stand Up to Bullying Day. They hang colorful posters and spend classroom time discussing bullying. They even have the students sign pledges saying that they will stand up for the victims of bullying.
But what happens when a kid takes the message to heart?
He spends the day in the principal’s office, has his locker searched, and is questioned by the police if he is at Sir John A MacDonald School in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
13 year old Briar MacLean interceded and disarmed a knife-wielding bully at his school last week.

The trouble started over an altercation between two boys at the school, located at 6600 4 St. N.W.
Again, school scraps are nothing unique — but then one of the boys pulled out a knife, turning an angry scuffle into something far more serious and potentially deadly.
At this point, according to the strict rules of the Calgary Board of Education junior high, MacLean should have left the scene to find a teacher, abandoning the unarmed student to his fate.
But instead of doing what was required, MacLean did what was right.
The young teen charged into the fray and tackled the knife-brandishing student.
The jolt sent the student and knife to the floor, leaving the potential stabber with a nasty bump on his noggin — but that was the extent of injuries received at Sir John A. Macdonald school that day.
No cuts, no stab wounds, and no need to call an ambulance — all thanks to a kid who chose to act rather than cower or run.
“He pulled out his flip knife so I came in and pushed him into the wall,” said MacLean.
“It was just to help the other kid so he wouldn’t get hurt.” (source)

The young hero spent the rest of the day in the principal’s office, where he was told that he should have run away and gotten a teacher.
His mother, Leah O’Donnell, received a call from the school to let her know that her son was in trouble for his part in the incident.

“They phoned me and said, ‘Briar was involved in an incident today,’” she said. “That he decided to ‘play hero’ and jump in.”
Ms. O’Donnell was politely informed the school did not “condone heroics,” she said. Instead, Briar should have found a teacher to handle the situation.
“I asked: ‘In the time it would have taken him to go get a teacher, could that kid’s throat have been slit?’ She said yes, but that’s beside the point. That we ‘don’t condone heroics in this school.’” (source)

Fortunately, Briar is undeterred by the schools grim look on his response to the bully and says he would do the same thing again. His mother is firmly in his corner.

“We’ve taught him to do the right thing and to step in — in our family we teach our children that they need to stand up for others and not run from danger out of self-preservation…
When did we decide as a society to allow our children to grow up without spines? Without a decent sense of the difference between right and wrong?” (source)

If anyone wonders how a person can be brutally attacked and left to bleed to death on city streets while pedestrians side step the assault and look the other way, the answer is clear – they’ve been taught to do so in school. During their formative years, children are being programmed. They are punished for doing what is right, instead of running away. They are taught to go and tattle instead of taking responsibility and helping another person, thus transferring the burden of safety into the hands of an “authority figure”. Having a nation full of people who are accustomed to standing up for the right thing, even at risk of their personal safety, does not make for a nation of malleable followers and worker bees. Instead, the current school policies and protocols are designed to create a nation of dependents who look to others to take care of problems, never even realizing that they have given up their liberty in exchange for safety.
Putting another person’s safety ahead of your own is the true definition of heroism and “anti-bullying”. All of the pink shirts in the world can’t fix this until the paradigm shifts and heroism is embraced again.

yeah, in a sense. but so were all the medal of honor winners, doing what THEY did. I think it's a shame that he didn't have a walking stick, with which he could break the knife wielder's arm, remaining safe, while teaching the punk a REAL lesson.

This is the key point of this incident and much of the policy of liberalism. Really caring about others that means you take action to help another instead of making a speech about "how much you care" but by actions, indicate wanting to not be involved, shows the real difference between the two "camps." So many of our "rulers" talk a big game and, while arrogantly promoting political correctness, actually show their true values. Unfortunately, our educators promote radical agendas over traditional values, punish those who show ingenuity or creativity, interrogate and detain children for normal actions of a child in the name of political correctness or try to destroy a kid for taking to heart their message of anti-bullying by stopping a bully who is a danger to others. The administrator's words to the mother speaks volumes, showing the true colors of liberalism: the end result doesn't matter as long as you do what we want you to do. It did not matter to her if the kid being bullied was seriously injured or killed as long as you do what they program you to do. - There have been numerous incidents like this, especially over the last 6 years. It is the same mindset as Pelosi's, "You have to pass the bill to see what's in the bill." All common sense and decency has to be sacrificed for the "good of the masses", which is "what we tell you is good for the masses." The latest example is the refusal by HHS Secretary Sebilius to cut the red tape to allow a 10 year old girl to get a desperately needed lung transplant and is being forced by a judge to cut the red tape and allow the transplant. Living in the state where she was Governor for way too many years, I can assure you she is doing what she always has, pushing policy she wants irregardless of how it affects anyone. I truly think, in the back of her mind, she was just hoping the little girl would hurry up and die. This is Obamacare, folks.

- One other point which addresses the Second Amendment: This is typical of what the anti-gunners want. Unarmed citizens that cannot defend themselves against the criminal element. When someone educates and arms themselves and stands up to the attackers, the instigators usually run away, if they can. They are opportunists who will attack those who cannot defend themselves, such as the Aurora Theater or Sandy Hook school. This is why I have my CCL.

Many years ago, a "tough-kid" (2 years older and much larger) tried the same thing on a certain guy, when he was in school, and wound up staring at the muzzle of an Iver Johnson 8 shot .22 revolver (1969) It was cocked, I might add, and the owner quite skilled and determined, too. He'd have shot the punk all 8 times, while backing away, etc, if need be, too. The punk could tell, and froze in place, as he had been told to do.

If one is armed then by all means they should defend another person against an armed attacker. But unarmed against a knife is usually a loser. This ain't TV.

Anyone who's ever been violently attacked knows if he wanted to slit that kid's throat he'd have done it. And if he truly intended he would have shanked the good Samaritan too. Mounting a successful Knife defense is extremely difficult when you're unarmed.

If you are successful in such a fight, the best you can hope for is a severe cut.

This whole incident is just another example of the "wussification" being taught to kids today. It was commendable that the kid took on the knife-wielding student and disarmed him. He had the balls to do what was right while, at the same time, risked being seriously injured himself. I would think that rather than being admonished, he would have been commended by the school. To act in a situation like that may have been foolish at the time and, if he had time to think, he may not have done it. Most "heroic" deeds are performed in an instant and thought about later. It is very easy to throw around the word "coward" when you don't know the facts surrounding the incident. You can not truly speak about what you would have done, only what you would have liked to do. Put the shoe on your foot and you may not be as brave as you think.

Meh.. School/teachers/etc tried to get me to back down from what I thought was right.. I have learned.. after years of hating myself, and hating life in general.. that the teachers/school/etc was all a bunch of MORONS who just wanted me to hate myself and my life.. to be something I wasn't.. to be a coward and run away from things.. when I always felt the need to stand and fight..

I highly doubt I would ever have been seriously injured as a kid in some of the fights I avoided instead of fought.. and even if I was seriously injured.. I am sure my life would have been emotionally allot better off knowing I stood up more for myself.. then I do now where I look back and think.. "damn Im such an idiot".

Sometimes.. You gotta stand up and say "NO, we are not gonna take it"
problem is its so much easier to sit on the sidelines and watch other people get hurt - not wanting to get involved.. meh... To hell with all of those types of people..

Doubtful the kid with the knife was much of a knife fighter, but your points here are still valid. Nevertheless I still applaud this young man. If I were his dad, I'd be proud of him, and then I'd see to it that he got some realistic martial arts training. It would be beneficial for him to fully understand just how dangerous this was. Not to dissuade him from acting, but to ensure that if and when he acts he does so with eyes fully opened.
