No-carry zones:The most dangerous place to be without your weapon! What do you think?

I'm curious how people feel about carrying in no-carry zones.

I have heard many arguments saying no-carry zones are the most important places to carry. Some people still choose to carry in these zones, knowing that if someone had the intent to hurt other people they wouldn't be following these no-carry rules anyway. These people would rather be prepared to protect themselves and risk getting in trouble with the law than risk not being able to protect themselves and others.

Do you think no-carry zones are protecting people or just making them more vulnerable?

I'll give benefit of the doubt that you aren't just trolling....

My thought is this.... if it's a no-carry place that is ILLEGAL, then I follow the law. If it's a no-carry zone that ISN'T illegal, but the place doesn't 'want' me to carry, then I carry if I want and disregard their sign. It should be noted that restaurants and other places of business aren't illegal so the worse thing they could do IF they found out was ask me to leave and trespass if I refused to leave.

IF they have to find out I am carrying, they will be darn glad I am!

No carry zones provide ineffective and nonexistent security measures to the general public. It is a 'feel good' measure that doesn't curb violence against soft targets. History has proven that. I follow law...reluctantly but will avoid no carry zones if I can. Aside from schools, no carry zones in Maine are generally sparse and not over legislated.

See something say something? Too bad this country has devolved to entrapment to pay the bills. This tread should be deleted.

Also, note that the only one truly responsible for my safety is....ME. Removing or limiting this responsibility and entrusting some "them" to assume it only makes me reconsider frequenting that business or location.

By the way,I teach my friends and family to run AWAY from me and find cover is the SHTF because l am likely to draw return fire in my direction.

I appreciate the earnest responses and am disappointed in the rude ones. I am asking an honest question. I am new to this world of guns, my family didn't own any when I was growing up and I have a lot of questions to ask as I come to find my own position on things. I thought this forum would be an open welcoming place to ask some questions, get some feedback and engage in intelligent discussion. If you don't want to be a part of the discussion or you think my questions are ignorant you are welcome to head over to a different post.
Thanks again to those of you who took the time to answer my question.

I don't go into no carry zones. Why would I?

This is how I see it.

It doesn't make anyone safer. I believe they do create a dangerous situation.

The property owner has their right to restrict firearms on their property.

I believe all rights are important, so instead of disrespecting the rights property owners have, and disrespecting the owners themselves, I'll be above reproach and not go into gun free zones.

That way, I'm being respectful, I'm exercising my rights, I'm spending money in places that aren't going to make more anti gun places, and I'm avoiding dangerous situations which will help me stay safe much more than carrying firearms in the first place.

You have got that right. Back to the old adage Outlaw guns and only Outlaws will have guns. Someone with straight out evil intent IS NOT going to pay the least bit of attention to "No Carry" postings.

I love your response Firefighterchen. I appreciate your respect for other's rights to have no carry zones but at the same time sticking to your beliefs about what will provide you and yours the best protection. Supporting what you believe in without disrespecting the beliefs and rights of others, now that is admirable.

A gun free zone is only free of guns held by law abiding people.

There is probably no, zero, nada data to support that a gun-free-zone sign has ever, ever stopped a person with bad intent.

Why do you suppose that the vast majority of mass shootings occur in gun free zones?
A) once a shooter starts, it's harder for the would be victims to stop him
B) many would be mass murderers are cowards at heart so they seek an target zone full of defenseless victims.

I leave you with this

I avoid no-gun zones like the plague they are. If absolutely compelled to enter one I (reluctantly) comply with the law, spend as little time "inside the zone" as possible and rearm as soon as possible upon exiting. When possible I set up appointments to keep wait time to a minimum.

Totally agree!!!

I carry where I can legally - in FL - where signs have no force of law. Sadly, I work on a state university campus where I cannot - and do not. Other than that, I do not go where I cannot carry.

If you wanna see no carry zones, look at HB1155's amendments (that actually passed) in Illinois. Although the carry statute has not passed, nor will it be allowed to, the restricted areas are, well, everywhere. Parking lots of casinos, schools, hospitals, government buildings, public transportation, churches, LIBRARIES, etc. Then "adjacent to or near" a government building (on the sidewalk in front of the building), daycare center (may God have mercy on your soul if you live "adjacent to or near" a daycare center), place of worship, private or public school, stadium, public gathering, etc. It goes without saying that carrying inside these buildings is also prohibited. There is no definition of "adjacent to" or "near" either (obviously intentional as to make it unenforceable).

The stupid part is that they wasted hours passing these moronic amendments that have absolutely no penalty at all. They just say "can't carry here" but they can't even tell you to leave. Basically, under the proposed garb....I mean, legislation, you can legally walk right up to the Metra in Chicago, pull out your pistol, drop the mag, empty the chamber, put it in a case, and get on the train...wow that's not menacing at all. Obviously we know what that means...there's no intention on allowing that to be voted into law. Universities would be fair game in IL as long as you get permission. Mmmm, OK, that's completely logical.

I carry in Iowa all of the time, there's only two places in Davenport (Bettendorf has no gun-free zones other than the standard) where carry is prohibited AFAIK...North Park Mall, owned by the Simon family, but the sign that says "no guns allowed" is almost literally in the center of the mall. The other is a bank that also houses Pearson (standardized testing, took the GMAT there) which is coincidentally right in front of the mall. Even Daisy Dook's in Davenport off I-80 (strip club, I haven't been there just heard stories :P) allows guns and the place is BYOB. Whatever, the worst they can do is toss me out since the signs are not legally binding and the mall cops don't care in Davenport as long as I'm not open carrying. I've seen people get thrown out of that mall for OC'ing, then make a big scene over how their Second Amendment rights are being violated (they seem to forget that business can refuse service).
