Here is the link the NJ carry permit...be aware that by trying to submit it will only result in the wasting of your time
http://www.njsp.org/info/forms.html#firearms

"Application must be delivered, in triplicate, to the Chief of Police of the municipality wherein you reside, or to the Superintendent of State Police in all other cases. A money order in the amount of $20.00 payable to
State of New Jersey must accompany this application.
Answer all questions. If more space is needed, attach bond paper. Page two must be completed. Four photographs of the applicant, one and one-half inch square, head and shoulders, no hat, light background, taken within the last 30 days must accompany this application."

You overlooked the part about needing to demonstrate that you actually can walk on water, that you're joined at the hip with a NJ Supreme Court Justice or are married to the Chief of Police in your town, and/or that you make so much money you can buy the freaking town and make your own rules.

Anyone else need not apply.

My aunt and uncle had no problems getting their carry permit. Is it typically difficult?

Unearthed, perhaps you could share a few of the details about how they achieved this miracle. Are they "connected", politically? Mafiosi, perhaps? What you're saying is nothing short of unbelievable, unless there's some overriding circumstance which you have to consider. Think about it and please...if you can...let us know.

They Moved out of state

Maybe they filled out the NJ CCW EZ form - commonly found at real estate offices
Real estate agents refer to it as a sales contract – sell your NJ home and your half the way there

I saw them today and asked them...they said they filled out the forms and whatnot and just went through the process. They live in Clark...not sure if it is easier/harder based on where you live.

I find it hard to believe that your aunt and uncle have CCW permits that are NJ issued, unless they are retired LEO (or former LEO now working as private investigators). NJ only allows permits to be issued to them, armored car security, and those who can prove "compelling need." The local police chief has to approve it, then it gets sent to a superior court judge, who must also approve it, and who has the authority to put restrictions on it. And neither police chiefs nor judges in this state are considered to be gun-friendly folk.

Many years ago it was a little easier, but as those permits expired, they were NOT grandfathered. The applicants had to fulfill all the new rules.

NJ does not recognize ANY out of state permits. If it did, my FL permit would be of use to me here.

On the application it states, "Each person applying for a Permit to Carry and Handgun must supply a letter of need, specific in content, as to why they have a need to carry a firearm in the State of New Jersey. If this application is employment-related, then your employer must supply this letter.
List the reason for this application: "

Does anyone have an example of this letter?

Unearthed, I would very much like to know what your aunt and uncle wrote on their letters.

I'd be very interested in that as well!

As far as the letter of need, you either have to be working for a licensed security company (who will supply the letter), a retired LEO, a former LEO now working as a private investigator, or show that you run a business where you deal regularly with staggering amounts of cash (such as you own ATM's).

As far as that last one, don't get your hopes up. If a judge decides to issue the permit, restrictions will be placed on it limiting the circumstances under which you can carry (such as carry permitted only while transporting cash over a certain amount).

For specific legal advice, you can ask the state's best firearms law attorney www.evannappen.com If you feel you can demonstrate the "compelling need" requirement, try giving him a call before wasting time handing in the application.

Silence, apparently, at least with regard to the question on the table. You've got a better chance trying to get a chicken to grow 4 legs than applying for a New Jersey CCW Permit. I got my FL Non-Res through the NJCSD's Right to Carry Roadshow they sponsor every once in a while. South Cariolina's next once I get a chance to get down there to take the class. The closest I'll get to carrying legally in NJ is when I carry here at home.

I don't know if I can recall the statistics correct but I think I have read that in total NJ has only approved something like 40 permits.

Wouldn't be surprised, nor would it surprise me to find that those 40 went to the well-healed and/or politically connected.

By the way, welcome to the party! Nice to have you here. You'll find some really great people, some astonishingly smart and remarkably intelligent posts...and posters. Jump right in and have a good time.

That number must exclude the armored car guards. So that number must refer to the politically connected, as Ektarr said.

I didn't even realize this thread was still going. I'm honestly not sure what they wrote on any letters or applications. Maybe they are lying...I dunno. I've certainly seen what my uncle referred to as his permit, it has a fingerprint of his index finger on it.

Oh, and they answer phones for a large company and are hardly rich or connected.

Unearthed

Please, when you see your relatives again, ask to see their permits. Turn em over, and look for "work restricted", or whatever else might be written there.

It's making us all crazy just to hear about them having permits. All because we know how the socialist tax&spend gulag functions in NJ.

I once had a NJ carry permit. Many, many years ago, while working on an armored car. I applied through the NJSP. Got the permit one week later. Went to the power mad Superior Court Judge, to be drilled&filled about the work restrictions he attached to the permit. Absolute insanity.

I do know of a gun store owner in Bloomfield, who is friends with the Bloomfield Chief of Police, and has a permit. This knuckle head has a dangerous sense of humor.

First, his permit is work restricted. Second, he open carries 24/7, and wears one of those phony badges on his belt, to make you think he is some kind of LEO.

He tells people the law will never know if he is coming or going to work. Wait till he is challenged about the concealed carry badge he bought on the web? Surely they will charge him with impersonating a cop.

I have not lived in NJ for some time, but NJ people might know this fellow? He has a gun shop in the basement of a single family home in Bloomfield?

Beware, he claims to be a gunsmith. DO NOT ever allow him to do anything to your guns. You would be better off doing it yourself.

Have a nice day:)

Sounds to me like a basic firearms ID card. That allows you to purchase and possess firearms, and to carry rifles and shotguns for lawful purposes (such as hunting). It does not entitle the owner to generally carry a firearm on his person in public, and therefore is not a carry permit.

I've seen a carry permit issued by NJ, and it had a photo on it, not a fingerprint.

And so the mystery is solved :D
