Night Sights -- yes or no?

Are night sights really that helpful?

Would you rather have night sights on your gun for conceal carry?
How big is the difference between regular sights and nights?

I do not have night sights on any of my 4 handguns, but I keep wondering about them for my 2 carry guns.
I have heard some people swear by them. I don't go out a lot at night, but when I do would night sights be of great help to me.

Oppinions please?

i would love a gun with a crimson trace light good for night and day..... chances are you won't be able to use your sights like you do practicing at a range but will be in motion trying to defend yourself not just standing there trying to align sights
best wishes always

Night sights are a must for a carry gun. I use both TruGlo TFO sights and a CT Lasergrip on each carry gun. The sights have a bright fiber-optic for daytime and a tritium insert for nights. Remember, lasers do not make anyone a better shot. Good fundamentals and trigger control are a requirement for accuracy.

The white dot sights on my carry gun (XD9SC) have faded to a dingy gray. Can't even see them that good in daylight.
I ordered the Trijicon night sites--green dots for the back and orange for the front--still waiting for them to come in to the gunsmith.
I figure the sites will be great for day or night and I like having that option

I wouldn't purchase a firearm without night sights any longer. The benefit of night sights is you get a clear sight picture in low to no light situations. This is an advantage to you since most shootings happen during low light situations. If you don't agree with me... go down the steps at night in your house without the lights on and see if you can gain a sight picture. You won't be able to.

I would refrain from a laser sight, for two reasons.... you give away your position and you give the BG a focus point to shoot at. With night sights the back of the sight is blacked out, so the BG will not see the tritium glow from his position.

My favorite night sights are Tru-Glo TFO (TFO stands for tritium and fiber optic). This sites blend fiber optic sights (great for sunlight situations) and also have the tritium which is great for low light situations. They are only about $100 installed... worth every penny.

I teach a low-light course. We recommend not activating the laser until you have the target somewhat acquired on your night-sights. You're absolutely correct. Walking around the house with your laser blazing away is a very bad tactic.

When using a flashlight it's hard to see standard sights. When you hit the light your eyes need a few seconds to adjust. During that time the standard sights can't be seen very well.

In order... approximate target location. Maintain night sight picture in that general area. Activate light, laser and fire in one fast sequential move. Immediately disengage light and laser but staying on target in the location. Leave the perp down and blinded by that 180 lumen flash.

GREAT question I am dealing with this right now. I have a new carry I just purchased and It it the best gun I have had for my hand love it (a CZ P07 DUTY) I can only get sights from CZ because no one makes them. I love the straight 8 style on my Glock19 EXO but they are not offered from Cz only a three dot horizontal. So I was considering the orange dot day sights they have. I am torn on what to do here. So any polite opinions would be appreciated

Night sights are extremely good to have, whether it's a carry gun or a home defense gun. I highly recommend different color front and rear sights. In a pitch black situation, it can be very difficult to distinguish beteween the front and rear sights when they're all the same color. Some people also rave about the sights that have the ring on the rear but I've never tried those myself.

Who aims anyway?

And when would you? If a perp took a hostage and was holding a gun or knife to their head or neck?

Ergo law enforcement might need night sights for a take down (wrestling term applied to police copping) after dark.

Mine are on the handgun, but I have yet to use them since I got to the range in the daytime only.

And if a perp struck at night I would not be aiming anyway just shooting.

So, good to have, but not necessarily necessary, unless you are a LEO.

This sounds really LEO to me, so again, for LEOs the night sights would be pertinent, although for others not so much if at all, if ever.

Sounds like a good class, for LEOs obviously.

I highly advise no one follow this advise unless you're dying to see what the inside of a jail cell looks like. Even if you hit your target in a legal shooting, comments or practices like that are very likely to land you in jail.

I have both Glock nite-sights and a Crimson Trace lasergrip on my carry G23. I also have new Glock nite-sights on my G21 replacing the original Glock nite-sights I had installed when I bought it 20 years ago.

Personally my EDC is a Kimber crimson carry so my laser is built into the rosewood grips, and also trijicon night sights but I very much would not have a carry gun or personal home defense handgun without both tritium night sights and a crimson laser. Is it a must have? No... But is it worth every penny when you life is on the line, damn snooky baby. Love it!

You have been smokin too much weed again Rhino. I did not give any advice. I pointed out that night sights on a handgun are unlikely to be useful to anyone but a LEO. How's the pipe?

A very big Yes vote. I was one that never had night sights on any of my handguns. I had very recently purchased a Glock 30 to carry concealed and decided I should try out some night sights if anything just to at least customize my g30 a little. After a little research and opinions from others I bought some XS 24/7 Big Dots. They are much nicer and easier to line up then stock Glock sights. I put 250 rounds thru it after I mounted the sights. By the way its very easy and quick to do. It was much faster and easier to get my sights on target. I loved them so much i got another set for my home defense G21 with a laser just in case of a laser failure.

Would I be able to install on my gen 3 g23 without special tools? Or is it best to have the gun smith install. I've been looking into night sites.

And just because you don't go to the range at night you just assume that no one will ever need to use their gun in the dark? I will concede that you didn't give advice though. My apologies on that point. I just disagree that night sights can be deemed useless just because you haven't used them. I'm sure there are lots of very useful things that you have personally never used before.

And shooting without aiming is an invitation to disaster, even if you do manage to hit your target. An overzealous prosecutor would have a field day with that. Heck, he wouldn't even need to be overzealous. Stating something like that publicly could come back to haunt you. It's happened before. I'm not the one who sounds like he's been smoking something funny.

Its ok Rhino I moved you onto the ignor list. That way your posts take up less space. Enjoy your pipe. Do you grow your own weed? Or do you have a steady stream of supply from someplace else? It must be powerful stuff.

I have night sights on all my carry weapons for the same reason I carry the firearm just in case. Take one night training course and you will quickly see how beneficial they can be. Also shooting in your home at night they can be a major plus.
