Nics i.d.

Does anyone have or applied for the personal I.D. . How hard is it to get and does it eliminate the delays when purchasing a firearm? Thanks for any input.

From the BATF website: you send in disposition of any criminal records, fingerprints, and $18 and they issue you a UPIN. Whenever you fill out the 4473 you put the UPIN. The dealer gives this number to the NICS employee and they go straight to your record without confusing you with all the other people with your name. I was thinking about doing the same thing. I got a delayed yesterday for a rifle purchase.

I still can't understand why a SSN wouldn't do the same thing. Suposedly, no two people have the same SSN.

They are trying NOT to use SSN for ID. Probably use it to get UPIN from BATF , but then wouldn't be putting it on form 4473 at local level.

SSN are used by dozens or even hundreds of people with fake IDs. Some counterfeiter gets a number, maybe just randomly selected, and makes a card...
It is called identity theft. And the government is trying to remove the SSN as ID. The FAA is purging their records on pilots and mechanics, at no chatge. New certificates no longer use SSN.
