Nickel Plated Gun Cleaning

I have a beautiful nickel plated Colt Python that was a gift from my uncle many moons ago. I haven't shot it in years because I dread cleaning it so much. It there anything I can put on the gun before I shoot it to make cleaning easier, or super new fangled solvents that would make cleaning easier?

CLP should work just fine.

Do NOT use Hoppes 9. This will dull the finish.
