NH 14-year-old shoots self in face in cafeteria

So how did he not only get the gun but get it into the school? I thought schools had metal detectors and rent-a-cops now to prevent things like that. Why were his parents so inept at keeping the gun/s out of the reach of a 14 year old? Why did he want to off himself especially in front of other kids? Somehow I see Walpole police filing multiple charges against the parents and CPS coming into play here. The kid will be placed under state care and will be prescribed mind altering drugs and the parents will play a blame game among themselves, divorce and the kid will grow up hating society and turn into a serial killer all because big brother stepped in and knows best. Sorry went on another tangent.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't courthouses the only places specifically listed as off limits under New Hampshire law? In this case the parents are the ones to blame, not school officials.

"Oh my! An actual gun in a gun free zone!? That's not supposed to happen! OMG!"

Thank God this troubled kid didn't try to shoot other classmates first. SMH.

Schools are specifically listed as off limits under Federal law, unless the state of NH licensed the kid to carry a handgun.

From the article:

said Cindy Mack, whose cousin is the boy's father. "He's a wonderful little boy. He's an avid hunter — like his name. He is very smart. He won prizes at school. He shot his first deer last year. He's a great, great kid."

Same song and dance as always. The kid committed a crime and violated school rules and he was a little angel up until that point.

Perhaps under NH law, but schools are covered under the Gun Free School Zone Act - which preempts state laws.

Did he tried to commit suicide or what? The news said it is clearly a relationship issue. Why is it almost always a man or boy below the age of 25 always drive themselves to ruin because of a girl? (I could have said something else but I won't...) That is soooo annoying!!!

Some of you seem to be saying that if a 14 year old carrying a gun in school were legal it would have been OK for him to shoot himself. Or at least that is the way many of your comments come across.

Ahh... he was a hunter he was educated in firearms handling. It was not an accident he was upset over a girl & was trying 2off himself.

Can U imagine a kid that age wanting to die over a girl. Wow. I hafta wonder if maybe he hadn't heard. I'll kill my self, I'll just shoot myself over & over from one of his parents who was unhappy...

It happens a lot in New Hampshire. Two kids I went to school with tried it. One wanted to end it over a girl ending it with him. The other took guns from his dads gun case and drove to the girls new boyfriends school and tried to walk him out. He planned to kill him, then her and her parents and then himself. The police got to him before anything happend. Walpole does not have metal detectors in their schools,it's in the middle of easy bum ********. None of the schools in this area have them.

Most schools still don't have that kind of security.

I saw on the news today an interview with one of the boy's schoolmates. She saw the shotgun. She said the shotgun had the camouflage finish, and the boy wore all camouflage that day. He partially hid the gun in his clothes...and what parts stuck out wouldn't have been obvious to a casual observer.

This would have never happened if we allowed kids to carry legally in schools...smfh

Seriously Dude?

Nobody here is saying that a 'kid' should be allowed to carry a firearm into any school.

Gun Free Zone Laws cannot effectively keep guns out of any building if some Psycho Maniac suddenly and unexpectedly decides to enter any GFZ with the intent to commit a violent crime.

Imagine if this troubled kid would have chosen to open fire onto other students and teachers instead of himself! Many innocent people could have easily been killed by this kid.

In a GFZ, Everyone is defenseless against any maniac who might decide to go postal at any moment.
It would take 'too many minutes' for Law Enforcement to arrive onto the scene to effectively stop the threat from immediatly continuing. By then 'numerous' innocent people would probably have been seriously wounded or murdered.

If even 'only a few' Law Abiding Citizens, (Principals, Teachers, Staff Members, Parents, etc..) Would be allowed by Law to carry a 'properly licensed' and concealed handgun in any GFZ, then tragedy's like Columbine and Virginia Tech could be greatly 'reduced'.

Instead of that psycho having 'free reign' at Virginia Tech; murdering 32 people and seriously injuring another 25 people in the so called GUN FREE ZONES, Imagine if a legally armed chl carrier (or two) could have been there to stop the gun wielding madman. Most likely it would have 'greatly reduced' the number of victims involved.

But apparently you are too blinded by your own 'Biased Agenda' to see this subject logically & rationally. You are being ignorant i.m.h.o.

I hate hearing the term defenseless used just to mean that someone doesn't have a gun. It is that kind of thinking that has gotten us to the point that we make excuses everyday to avoid responsibility. The thought that I am defenseless since I don't have a gun is the same as I can't eat because I don't have a job making $100,000 a year. There are many stories of people defending themselves, some in schools, against someone with a gun without having to wait on someone with a gun to save them. I agree with most of your post but not having a gun does not equal defenseless. People defended themselves for a few thousand years without one.

this gfz law passed is stupid you cant have a ccw within 100 ft of a school what about the people that live directly around the schools?
