New Yorker traveling by plane Newark Nj to Fl to compete in a match in Florida on Jet

So I am a licensed pistol permit holder and I plan on competing in a GSSF event in January in the state of Florida

I been shopping for flights and found flights with Jet Blue out of Westchester NY, Small airport still in my home state

I found flights with Jet blue out of Newark NJ for about $140.00 less round trip Per traveler (We have 3 people flying) So we could save $320.00 total

Both airports are a 45 minute drive for me.
This is our first time flying with Fire Arms for competition

As I understand the law as long as I am legal to bring the guns to my final destination I am OK to travel thru a state I am not licensed to carry in (New Jersey)

I plan on purchasing ammo in Florida.so we will be traveling with no ammo
I plan on putting all three gun in my hard plastic lockable Kimber case with flags in the chamber showing they are empty.I will have a combo lock on the Kimber case.I have my name and phone number on the case .I will have a copy of my license for NY and FL in the case along with a copy of the registration papers for the event.

We have 3 shooters with 3 sets of eyes, ears, holsters and 2 piece belts plus range bags with empty magazines I had planned on putting all our gear in one suit case with the guns .

The advise I am looking for has anyone from NY traveled thru Newark with a firearm? Was it a hassle would I be better off going thru the small NY airport and spend the extra money on air fair

I am traveling with my son 18 years old and my brother inn law

Thanks In advance for your advice

Just travelled from Texas to CA with my legal firearm in locked hard sided case actually saved me standing in a large line as when I notified the airline personnel they sent me to a special TSA area and bags were checked by a couple of TSA agnent and we were sent past the line and to the boarding area quick and easy.

First, don't put your guns in checked luggage. Call the airline and get instructions for transporting a handgun. Some airlines will have a different place to check the gun, depending on carrier and airport.

Second, NJ does not prohibit out of state residents from entering the state with their handgun... even just to shoot at a range. NJ does not recognize any CCW reciprocity or even concealed carry by the average state resident. All handgun owners must lock the firearms, each in it's own container, unloaded. You must have a copy of your NY license as well. Do not mix several peoples' handguns in the same checked baggage.

The definitive source for this would be Anthony Colandro at Gun-For-Hire in NJ www.GunForHire.com. I would call him for advice.

On the last three flights I have taken with different airlines, was told to place gun in baggage, if it is a handgun, but do check with individual airline and follow their recomendation, but travel with a gun is actually easy.

Thank you all for the information. I called TSA and Jet blue all is good

The explained the guns will make no difference in which airport I chose to travel from. They explained what ever added time the airport or TSA recommends to arrive early at the airport just allow yourself a half hour above that time.

Thanks again
