New York State Non-resident Rifle Laws

I am a Florida resident, and I have been attending a university in NY for over a year. I am over 21, and I have been trying to understand NY state laws on rifle ownership. Coming from a state like Florida, I am a little over whelmed with the "laws within laws" approach to gun ownership, so I would appreciate a straight, spoon fed answer. My question: can I buy and posses a rifle in the state of NY?

I don't know of any law that would prohibit a non-resident from buying a legal long gun from a licensed firearms dealer in New York State.

Many of my son's college buddies at Paul Smith's in the Adirondacks bring their rifles and shotguns to school even though they are non-residents of New York State. The school allows them to do so so long as the guns are registered and left with security when not being used for recreational purposes.

But you would need a permit to buy a long gun in New York City unless you are removing the gun from NY City within 24 hours.

Further more it is illegal to have a firearm, rifle or shotgun on any college campus in all of New York State unless you have specific permission from the college to do so (as is the case with my son's school.)

In NY, a semi auto rifle and all magazines must comply with the former Federal assault weapons ban.

So long as you are not in NY city or the "five boroughs" you do not need a license to own/possess a long gun in NY state. Buying one is a different stituation altogether. Federal law doesn't allow you to purchase a firearm in a state other than your residence state, unless it's a contiguous state and the states have passed a contiguous state provision.

Check with the security section of your school to see what rules they have for firearms on campus.
