New to this gun law stuff, question re: hi cap magazines

I'm planning to take a course (are they just classroom or is range time an option?) and apply for my class A (why not right?)
The guns that I have been looking at, watching reviews, reading information on are
the S&W M&P and the Walther PPQ. Both have hi cap mags available, the class A permit says it allows hi cap magazines.

So can I just buy the hi caps, or is this where the pre-ban stuff comes up?
It makes zero sense to me to allow hi cap magazines, and then require that they be
old hi cap mags.

Same question for (semi-auto) AK47 mags. (I didn't look to see if AKs are even on the list).

I also like Glocks, and just went through the glock thread scratching my head re: hi cap mags. Why did I move to Mass? damnit.

First off if you can, move north th NH. We are very gun friendly.

Second in Mass hi capacity is >10 rd mag. From what I understand you are unable to get a 33 rd mag in Mass (Glock has them). The hi capacity mags might be 15 or 17. As far as I know you can buy them but you might have to show you LTC.

Good question.I don't have "high capacity" anything myself, and I forget how it was explained to me. I don't know too many folks here in MA. Who is to say, though, how many rounds it takes to save your life? I guess THEY do. Anyway good luck and be safe.

A firearm is large capacity if it is a semi-automatic handgun or rifle that is capable of accepting (or readily modifiable to accept) any detachable large capacity feeding device that holds more than ten rounds, OR if it is a semi-automatic shotgun capable of accepting more than five shotgun shells, OR if it is an assault weapon. Magazines holding more than ten rounds that were manufactured after 9-13-94 are illegal. For example, an M&P 9 is a large capacity handgun that is legal to possess with a LTC-A. The M&P did not exist in 94 so you can not possess any magazines for it that hold greater than 10 rounds.

Is this correct? I thought it was the reverse and if they were manufactured before then they were legal. Shouldn't you have said after 9-13-94 are illegal? Since I don't live in a state that has a restriction I don't know.

I want to start by saying that I have NOT read all the responses but I did just finish the safety course today and although I KNOW what the instructor says does NOT make it Gospel, this is what he said to us today on the subject. He said (and I am quoting...duh), "If the gun is Pre-1998 - there are no regulations on magazine size." If the gun is POST - 1998, you cannot own a 10<mag unless bought in another state (but totally legal to bring in). Makes no sense.....I know. I'm just a perhaps misinformed messenger.

Ok I live in mass and this gets brought up alot. A Class A LTC enables you to own HiCap handguns and the associated magazines. IF the MAGAZINE was made on or prior to 9-13-94. Any mag that was made prior to that date is good to go, regardless of where its located (can buy one in Florida and bring it back if you want, what ever) IF the mag was made after that date it is a felony, period. If you buy the gun from a LEO who is allowed the post ban hi caps, YOU may not own them. If you move here from a free state, you have to dispose of them. You can only own pre 9-13-94. If I go to NH and buy a hi cap mag for my M&P40c, and bring it across the border, I have committed a felony (they were never made before 9/13/94). If I move here with it, felony. If i own a glock, AK, AR etc and buy a preban mag in ohio....Im good to go and its 100% legal. Also we live under an AWB, so if someone moves here with an extra killy evil AR with a flash hider and a bayonet lug = felony unless you get the stuff cut off etc. That is of course...its a pre ban lower. If you have any questions feel free to send me a PM. Also check the stickies at the top of the page here: Massachusetts Laws
