New to Guns, But Excited to Learn

I'm soon to be single, and my brother is giving me a Glock for self-protection at home. I've never even touched a gun before, so I have a lot to learn. We'll be going out to the shooting range next week. I'm excited.

Do yourself a favor and get some formal instruction. Find an NRA class and take Basic Pistol or First Steps Pistol.

NRAInstructors.org - Portal for NRA certified Instructors, NRA Education and Training

Good for you. I love to see more women getting involved in the shooting sports. The advise about seeking formal training is as solid as it gets. As you know, firearms can be your best friend, or your worst nightmare, and a little help from a pro can be a big plus to a new shooter. Good luck!

Congratulations on getting your first gun. As stated above, time at the range with a certified NRA instructor would be a great way to learn and get acclimated to your gun. Also get familiar with the gun laws in your state. The firearm instructor can help you understand them better as well. Happy and safe shooting to you!

We took concealed carry class and learned lots. Also at our gun club you have to take the NRA class to join. It's more than just shooting, get professionals to help. Good luck! It's.

opdykeboyz, I wrote a small book as supplement to my classes, and I'd love to share it with anyone who might like to read it. Send me an email ( mamaliberty - at - rtconnect.net) Just replace the -at- here with the @ and don't leave any spaces. :) I'll send it right away.

The first chapter is the story of the man I had to shoot to save my life. Link Removed

I didn't have any training at that point, and was very lucky to survive. Building knowledge, confidence and experience can only help.

IMVHO, the very first things that you should learn about your Glock is how to;

1) Clear it (Unload it), 2) Field strip it, 3) Clean it, 4) Put it back together, & 5) Reload it & chamber a round.
Then after you have learned how to do all of that, you need to learn how to properly shoot it.

Good luck to you and stay safe. =-)

As the Outlaw said. You can get Snap-Caps at a gun shop. They look like bullets, but normally are plastic. This allows you to safely cycle the weapon allowing you to get use to it's workings.

welcome op and michelle! i like the walther pk .380 a friend has easy to rack carry ...the ruger lc9 might be a good carry gun as well........but shop around pick brains and see and feel for yourself what fits well and comfortable in your hand .......go to a gun show and pick up a few and or a gun range and rent a few you think you might consider
best wishes friends stay safe as more and more women are buying guns and wisely so imo

I was absolutely amazed at how different guns felt in my hands. We went to all the local shops and to many different gun shows. I already knew I didn't want to use the guns my better half had and finally settled on one that fit perfect. I have slight hand issues and couldn't find one that I could rack easily. I checked out the sig p238, racking it was smooth and easy to use. That sealed the deal for me, easy to carry. Best advice, shop around and as they said, the range may have some to check out also. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I am new to guns as well, what do you think would be a good first buy for a not petite woman!

As some others have said, training would help you decide, but if you have any indoor ranges near you that rents handuns, go there and look over what they have, for a personal carry gun, I would tend to go with a 9mm or compact 45, the 40s are great but being new they may have unpleasent recoil, same go's for the small stubby 38s great carry guns if thats what you want but recoil can be irritating, also stay away from the small light 380s conceal great but are very unpleasent to shoot, this is why I say go and ck out all the guns, hopefully there will be a counter person there who can steer you in the right direction, good luck and keep us posted

1) Don't listen to the knucklehead behind the counter at the gun store.
That person is there to make a living selling existing inventory, so what ever is in the display case is "EXACTLY what you need."

2) Read read read.. Cornered Cat - Table Of Contents is a good starting place

3) Defend the constitution that recognizes your right to self defense. Your rights have been severely abrogated in most locations in the USA. Cast your vote accordingly please.
