New Sig P938

Hey everyone. I just picked up this bad boy in Rosewood from Academy yesterday for $679. Serial Number: 27xxx, Born Date: 10/19/12. Sadly it did not come with an extended mag or paddle holster as I was expecting. I guess that is what I get for buying from a chain like Academy. Also, I would expect an October birth date to have a higher serial number, but apparently I am wrong in that assumption.

Anyways, I took it home, dismantled and cleaned it last night. I gave it a thorough cleaning and was very generous on lubricating the rails on both the slide and frame, recoil spring, guide rod and the outside of the barrel. After cleaning I racked the slide approximately 5-600 times to get everything loosened up a bit.

I am hoping to get to the range this weekend to try it out. In order to ensure this puppy is working at its full potential, do you guys have any other cleaning/maintenance suggestions I should perform before I take it to the range? I have been reading people with earlier models having issues, but later models have been performing better. Let me know if you can help, or if you think I'm on the right track.

Also, if you have any ammo suggestions I would appreciate them as well. Right now I have a 50rnd box of 147gr Federal HST JHP. I'm looking for some consistent and cheap practice ammo. Thanks!

I would use Winchesters white box ammo, 115 gr. FMJ for training. The 147gr. are going to give you a bit of a harsh recoil in that light of a gun. For maint. I would follow the owners manual. All the Sigs I have fired have had flawless operation.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I went to the range today for the first time and fell in love.

I shot 57 rounds of 147gr Prvi Partizan (Serbian) FMJ. I would have shot more, but time was running out. The 938 handled it really well. There was one FTF out of the 57 rounds about half way through my session. This was also the first magazine I shot 6+1 (I shot 6 mags with 6 rounds and 3 total mags with 6+1), so that could have been why. I simply ejected the round and continued on my merry way.

It seemed to be shooting a little left, but it could have been my grip as I am still getting used the smallness of the pistol. I also am by no means a great shooter, so it could just be my shaky hand.

The trigger was a bit heavy so I'll probably have my local gun smith do some work on it. I'll also be taking some sand paper to the face of the trigger to dull down those edges a bit - they sure do bite.

All in all, I am very happy with my purchase, along with my wife! She doesn't like semi-autos, but she loved my little 9. The 238 may be in her future.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions! Happy shooting.
