As a Ruger fan, I'm wondering if anyone has had a chance to shoot the new SR-762? If so, what did you think? This may be something I add to my collection down the line.

The round it shoots is the 7.62X51 not the 7.62X54. I'd be one of the first in line if it did shoot the 7.62X54R round.I'd be interested in one of these as well. IF the supply of mags is decent and they aren't too pricey, and Ruger offers it with a longer barrel. A 16 inch tube is seriously sub-optimal for military 7.62x54. I have a DSA SA58 Carbine with a 16 inch barrel and the report is just atrocious, muzzle flash is truly a sight to behold around dusk and you loose a lot of velocity over a 20 inch barrel. A long time ago Shooting Times did a cutdown of a .308 bolt gun. Started off with a 24 inch barrel, they took the barrel down in either 1 or 1/2 increments to 16 inches and chrono'd two or three loads at each increment. It was a really interesting experiment and I wish I could remember all the numbers and or find the article but this was about 25 years ago. They determined that with the ammo of the day, which is pretty close to NATO Spec 7.62 the optimum barrel length was 18 or 18 1/2 inches. It shot nearly as fast as a 20 inch barrel and faster than anything longer than 21, but when you got shorter than 18 you started getting a significant loss of velocity due to un-burned powder. Admittedly ammo technology has come a long, long way since then and you can probably purchase factory ammo now that is optimized for shorter barrels but it still makes shooting surplus 7.62 somewhat unpleasant.
