Of Arms and the Law: New record sniper shot

A British sniper in Afghanistan has scored two one-shot kills at 1.54 miles, on a pair of Taliban machinegunners.

Wow. Just wow. That is a he!! of a shot to make once, but TWICE?

Was the previous record shot taken in Afghanistan by a Canadian sniper? I saw something about that shot on the History Channel. The thing that got to me was that he took 4 shots to hit his target. Given his range it was impressive but I didn't think it was in the same class as some of Hathcock's shots or the sniper in Iraq they talked about.

Yes, the previous record holder was the Canadian who was highlighted on History Channel.
GySgt. Carlos Hathcock's story is told in the book Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills by Charles Henderson. Gunny Hathcock was also a National champ and an inspiration to many future marksmen.

Used a 50 cal , Barrett, with mil dot scope , he had a and spotter ,set site 4 dots up, and 4 dot lead .. hit as they were moving . There were 3 of the insergants , and only one was carrying an open weapon. Beleive it was a RPK, but it was a remarkable shot , as the first 3 rounds fell short , but on line .

That was the Canadian shot, correct? Impressive, but nothing impresses me like a cold-bore shot. Nothing against the Canadian shot (or shooter).

Slightly off topic, but is the .416 Cheytak (sp?) in use anywhere? Supposedly it has a range as far as or farther than the .50 (of course you still have to be able to hit what you're aiming at).

The .50 was selected for use in a sniper rifle, not because of it's ballistics or accuracy, but in typical DOD fashion, they chose it because they have LOTS of it and a proven re-supply process. The .408 Chey Tac and the .416 Barrett are each better selections based on ballistics data.
