New Oklahoma Open Carry

It will always require some common sense as well as sensitivity toward others. .
When I was a kid, I was afraid of flowers. Especially big flowers like sunflowers and deep flowers. Why? Because my dad watched the original Star Trek where they were always getting killed by the spores the flowers would spit on them.

After seeing flowers for a few months that didn't spit out spores on planet Earth, I got over my fear of flowers.

Now, just substitute the word guns for flowers. How are we ever going to change the evil perception of guns that people have crammed into their heads by the media and anti-gun groups if they never experience Joe Citizens carrying guns for self protection in their everyday lives? Concealed carry can't change that perception, but open carry at least has more chance of changing it.

I had forgotten all about the new law allowing open carry, or should I say the law preventing cities and counties from restricting OC. I am currently trying to find a way to obtain CCL without having to pay for a privilege guaranteed by the constitution. I saw where you can take an online course from Virginia and is supposed to be honored in other states, am waiting for reply to find out for sure.

I think you make a very valid point! People who CC have very little effect on the "Right to Bear Arms" issues because very few people know they are carrying. One of the big problems is that the only time you hear about someone Open Carrying on the news or the internet is when it is negative, like someone arguing with a store owner about his right to open carry. There is a difference between discussing and arguing, but it gets crossed real quick. Then the incident is looked at as a problem.

For example.... I was open carrying one night in a local restaurant that has a bar section. In Washington state it is only illegal to carry in that portion of the establishment that is designated as >21 years of age by the Liquor Control Board. I was obviously in the restaurant section. My 15 year old step daughter was there to participate in Karaoke along with many other <21 year old teenagers. A person comes up to me and says that I can't have my gun in a bar. I reply, I am not in a bar. Person says, well you can't have your gun in a class (whatever, I don't remember) liquor establishment. I say, Washington State law says that I cannot have my firearm in a portion of an establishment off limits to <21 years old persons. If this is such an establishment, then explain to me how this whole group of teenagers are here? Person replies, Well you can't have your gun in here. I ask, Do you work here? He says, I am the owner! I reply, well, as the owner, I will respect your wishes and take my gun to the car, and we will finish our evening here, but I won't return, and you might want to familiarize yourself with what the law really says.

I took my gun out to the car that night, let my daughter finish her night out with friends and have not returned. No heated argument, just a calm discussion. BTW.. the owner even had the "no guns" sign posted at the proper place - at the entrance to the >21 years old restricted area!

NavyLCDR,

I do not think you could have handled yourself any better that what you did.

The only other thing you could have possibly done to further the cause would have been to print out a copy of the Washington State law and mailed it to the owner. Maybe after he read it, he might have understood that he was mistaken.

The class they were talking about is one recognized as meeting the training standards of the VA CHP application. Unless you live in a Constitutional Carry state (VT, AK, AZ, WY - residents only) you are going to have to pay a fee no matter what you do.
