New Guy here: CCW in Virginia

Ok...here is my dilemma. I am hearing impaired (thereby referred to HI) but have been around hunting rifles for a long time. I have some handguns, 2 Springfields 45's and 2 S&W 9mm.

I do not have a CCW and been thinking about taking CCW/CHP class. I think in VA I may not have to take this class but think I will go ahead and take this class. I'd like my wife to go too :biggrin: and she is HI too.

I will definitely need an interpreter for this class since I want to understand what is being said and know my wife feels this way too. (she does not shoot high power rifles though).

Does anyone know where there are CCW classes in Virginia with interpreters? :hang3: I know this is a sticky situation but also know maybe other HI have been through this or even some members here have been through this.

My expectation is most private instructors have never been faced with the issue before. You may have to use your experience with interpreters to put an instructor and an interpreter together and work out the details.

you DO have to have concealed handgun permit or hunter safety course to get permit in VA. Some other qualifiers will work, but those are the main 2

First Welcome to the Forum from Tampa Bay, Floriduh...

I would ask you, in your HI community, do you know of others that may want to take the class??
If you can get enough people, you all can share the cost to bring in an interpreter OR maybe if you get enough, the instructor might even spring for it..

Since it is not a glass given by the gov't, I'm not sure they can be required to provide the service, but you could contact the state agency that insures the American Disability Act is being applied, and maybe they have a suggestion on how to get the help you need..

Thanks for the offer! Interpreters are not always available and are not that cheap. I do not live in MO, my state of residence is VA.

I guess I can go in knowing hunting license will do although I don't know if this will always work. I think most judge want folks to take class to be sure they know the stuff. I know in a defensive sutiation we should use a handgun as a last resort and if truly in a threatening situation.

I just feel in my stomach that getting a CCW/CHP is almost possible with a hunting license. I may be wrong but Virginia is a "shall-carry" state which is better than a "may-carry" so we'll see.

I really wanted to get this class and have my wife go to class with me and get her familiar with handguns from a professional's perspective and also I think maybe these classes also offer different scenarios a person can encounter in a threatening situation...which my wife needs to be exposed to.

Hello bluridge from another new member! I've been reading the forums here for a few days and finally joined so I can give you some good news. I took my class last Saturday and on there web site it shows that you can take the VA course online. Here is a link and I hope it helps.

To settle your nerves a little...from VA's website:

The court shall require proof that the applicant has demonstrated competence with a handgun and the applicant may demonstrate such competence by one of the following, but no applicant shall be required to submit to any additional demonstration of competence:

1. Completing any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries or a similar agency of another state;
2. Completing any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;
3. Completing any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law-enforcement agency, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association or the Department of Criminal Justice Services;
4. Completing any law-enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;
5. Presenting evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or current military service or proof of an honorable discharge from any branch of the armed services;
6. Obtaining or previously having held a license to carry a firearm in this Commonwealth or a locality thereof, unless such license has been revoked for cause;
7. Completing any firearms training or safety course or class, including an electronic, video, or on-line course, conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association-certified firearms instructor;
8. Completing any governmental police agency firearms training course and qualifying to carry a firearm in the course of normal police duties; or
9. Completing any other firearms training which the court deems adequate.

A photocopy of a certificate of completion of any of the courses or classes; an affidavit from the instructor, school, club, organization, or group that conducted or taught such course or class attesting to the completion of the course or class by the applicant; or a copy of any document which shows completion of the course or class or evidences participation in firearms competition shall constitute evidence of qualification under this subsection.

More training is always great and highly recommended. But if you already have your hunters card thats enough to get your CHP.

VA accepted hunter safety

I got a concealed handgun permit in VA a few years ago and my hunter safety course taken 15 years earlier in another state was accepted as sufficient training. NRA Basic Pistol follows the manual fairly closely so an interpreter may not be needed.

permit in VA for HI

Thanks for all of the folks. When I put up this first post a few days ago I search the wonderful world of internet and found a few things. As one postor said I can do the online thing and I found this out as well. Not only that but I can also get my CHP using my hunting license/hunter safety as training. These both will work for me but I had always thought showing my application with a hunter safety training/license would be "just barely qualifying" and would get turned down. But I guess not.

I will let you all know how it goes when I do go to submit my license.

I am not on public assistance full time. I work full time and so does my wife work full time. We both are deaf and we have two hearing kids age 8 and 6. I know a few deafies who rely on public assistance all the time. But my wife and I are college educated and put our skills to use by working and earning a living like everyone else does.

I have not applied for my CHP but will get this form filled out and submit it soon. I believe my hunters safety course will suffice but I may want to take one of those NRA courses and want my wife to take it too so she can handle my pistols if needed.

This forum is good for learning other scenarios. Just because some one approaches you suspiciously does not mean you can use your sidearm, there must be a clear and present threat.

I think most who have shot handguns know how to handle these guns, its just that a person with a CHP has an increase responsibility when carrying. I am confortable with that although here in Northern VA is not like in Kentucky as everything is on highest alert because of the terrorist threat to our Nations Capital.

Contact gun shops in your area, that is the first place to look. They should be able to start you on a path that will get you your CCP in Virginia.

Depending on the area in Northern Virginia you will find gun shops to ultimately be unhelpful. I live in Alexandria and have been really unimpressed with the service down here, but I'm used to a smaller town so that may be clouding my judgment. I found that the police were actually very helpful with the process, the form can be had off their website. Fill it out and they'll help you out from there.

And for the record I used my out of state hunter safety course and the accepted it without any complaint. Though like you said, a proper course won't do any harm, and the more comfortable and proficient you are with firearms the safer you, you're wife and the public will be.
