New gun shoots low

an anyone tell me if it is unusual for an automatic pistol to shool six inches low at about 25 feet. I bought a Bersa 380 about a month ago and have fired a couple of hundred rounds through it. The pistol has windage adjustment, but no elevation adjustments. Been to Vietnam, and know about guns.

It might help to know the model as well as how new to you this firearm is.

One particular company's polymers are notorious for shooting 1-8 inches low at just 21 feet, which is horrible for any company as the accuracy gets so much worse as distance increases.

6 inches low at 25 feet indicates the likelihood of a user problem or a product problem in most cases. A product problem could be either the firearm or even your ammunition of choice.


Is this the version of the .380 Bersa that has the hard-mounted combat sights like what is on the Ruger LCP? If so, that's going to give you a problem until you learn those sights. There's an excellent version of those sights with orange dots that I really like.

Being as though you are a Vet like me, I would not be dumb enough to try to school you in sight alignment. I assume you already know about all that. I have a Bersa Thunder 380, and love the gun. Mine does not seem to shoot low at all - right to point of aim at seven yards. You might want to consider taking about .01 to .015 off the top of your front sight. A friend I work with has an Astra that shot too high at 25 feet, and we took .015 off the top of the rear sight and it put it right on the money. JMHO. :biggrin:

well how about if you adjust the position of the gun in your hand and see if that makes a differens on your zero. when you get consistent then see if you need to adjust the actual sights.

I'd buy the bullets that I intend to shoot and buy a file. I've fixed several with a file, pick the distance that you want it to be accurate and get to work.

did you look through the packaging? There's usually about 3 front sights included with any handgun I ever bought.

Before you break out the files, have someone who you know can shoot try the gun out to verify what's going on.

Most of the time, it is the loose nut behind the hammer, not the sights and a second opinion is a LOT cheaper than replacing parts and pieces.

Is this from a bench rest? Did you have another shooter confirm same or different?

I went through this with a friend of mine and his new M&P9 (MA compliant w/ 10+ lb trigger pull) It was the horrendous trigger pull and rear sight being off to the left...

Have another or perhaps 2 other shooters that you trust, have a go at it..

I've never used sights if it doesnt point like your finger it's the way you hold the gun. I learned this from m1911's. Try a bore sight and see if the way you hold it.
