Just purchased a Springfield 45. Looking for any recommendations for good self defense ammo. Any suggestions?

Congrats on making the decision to arm yourself.

As previously stated hornady critical defense is a great round. Pretty much all jhp around that price range are though.

If you watch a few online ammo sites you can find Federal HST or Winchester Ranger Talon series available. They are some of the best rounds available and since Winchester and Federal only market them to law enforcement they are cheaper than the commercial self defense loads. You can catch them available on ammunitiontogo.com or kylesgunshop.com. Sometimes law enforcement orders some and doens't pick it up. The companies can then sell to the general public. Buy them if you find them in stock as they won't stay in stock long.

Ammunition To Go : 50rds - 45 ACP Winchester Ranger Talon 230gr. +P HP Ammo [RA45TP] - $39.95

I carry Hornady, take your gun to the range, squeeze of a few clips of different self defense rounds. See what feels the best for you, and what shoots the best outta your gun. Gold dot and federal are also good rounds. And congratulations on your new purchase.

Congrates man, I too bought a Springfield XD .45 service just last year for my first gun purchase. This bad boy will eat anything without fail. As far as defense, my research has lead me to depend on speer gold dot, 16"-18" penatration in ballistic gel in .45, for me, the less corllateral damage the better. Watched some youtubes about the Hornady not expanding properly, the fabric of clothing has been known to mix that that red clay/rubber stuff in the bullet and not expand properly. Not sure if they worked this out or if it's been talked about much on here. I'm not knocking the round, I'm just stating what I've seen, no one can really rebuttle these youtubes, unless they've run the test themselves, just saying. Goo luck.

While I carry the Hornady CD I just have to throw out a a tip of the hat to old tried and true 230 gr ball. It worked pretty well for the first 100 years.

Thanks for the information. I see that Hornady CD is pretty popular. I'll have to look into that. Thanks again and be safe!

Right on! That's why I have over 1500 rnds of ball on hand, ready for zombies or anything else that may come our way. Mainly for the range currently. Can't beat $17.oo, 50 rnd boxes at the 'ol walmart.
