New gun owner and thinking of getting a CCW in Ohio

Hi I am a new gun owner, new member of usacarry.com and I have been thinking of getting my CCW here in Ohio. I have been looking around and I hear of people going to classes for their CCW and others getting it done online. What are my options here in Ohio and what experiences have you had with either option? Will I need anything additional to the gun in order to take the course? ie. holster, and documentation? I enjoy going to the range but I would really like to exercise my right to own and carry my gun. I appreciate any feedback you can give.

Check your state laws, contact an instructor certified to teach the class. Ask questions, it's different in every state. Stay away from online classes.

The law requires 2 hours of range time as part of the class so I would be very surprised if there are any "online" classes. Start by reading the Attorney General's Concealed Carry Manual which will explain a lot about the process. If you apply for your license, you are required by law to read that manual anyway.

When I took my ccw course I only have my then intended hand-carry with me. We also have the required number of ammo with us for our guns. (my hubby took the same course on the same day with me...) Anyway, the instructors supplied the rest of the gun that we need to qualify in and also all the ammos that we used. We did not have to use our own ammo. But we live in MO, so your state may vary when it comes to this rule.

I live in Ohio and you don't need anything but the gun for the class time, and I think with a lot of instructors you don't even need that. For the 2 hour range time you'll need your gun, like 100 rounds of ammo, and ear and eye protection.

When friends of mine took the class, everything was provided for them but my instructor told us that some other instructors do some crazy tactical style training in their concealed carry courses, so the classes vary quite a bit. Your best bet is to call and set up your class time and ask then what you'll be needing.

I recently took the class here in Ohio. We actually had an istructor come out to our house and give the class, we live in the countrty so shooting in the backyard is an option for us. It was a 12 hour class, 2 hours range time. Our instructor brought several different guns and ammo, plus you could shoot your own. We also were able to get our Utah certificate with this course.

Don't forget a holster. Most instructors require a holster so that everyone in the class is not waving their guns around out on the range. Not much standardization here in Ohio-----as long as the basic info is an approved course, the rest is up to the instructor as to how they present and what they add.

Maybe it's just the way this is written, or maybe it's the part about looking for an easy "online" license, but I don't hear a lot of commitment or serious consideration of what carrying involves in this thread. Carrying a gun will absolutely change a person's lifestyle and should be proceeded by a good bit of consideration of how it will change not only the gun owner's lifestyle, but those people that will be affected by association with a person that carries.

It takes years to become competent with gun use in any form. Buying a gun, getting a license, and walking the streets armed is not like taking a yoga class.

Thank you for all your great responses, well except that last one, what a tool box. I am not sure how they do it down there in Texas but while I was living in Detroit with my family, and we were nearly held at gunpoint, and I say nearly because I drove off as he shot at the side of our car with my kids in the car, that would probably prompt you to get your CCW too. So please don't talk about my "commitment" or wanting an "easy" online course, I simply asked what peoples thoughts were on a few subjects.

To everyone else, I do appreciate your insightful responses. I am a lover of learning and when it comes to the protection of my family, I will do every bit of learning there is possible.

I did mine about 5 or 6 months ago all in one day with an instructor out of Delaware county I think. You had the option to either bring your own firearm or use their .22, the price was around ~$60. I wish I had his card still because this is by far the cheapest class I have heard of.
