New Bans on Firearms?

Report Urges New Bans on Firearms - Newsweek.com.

President Obama has been largely silent about gun control during his first term, but many gun owners have expressed concerns that he would address the issue if he is re-elected and no longer constrained by re-election worries.

Gun control advocates who have also stayed relatively quiet during Obama’s first term are already coming forward. The Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research has issued a new report whose recommendations include the regulation of gun designs and banning “problem drinkers” from owning firearms.

The Insider Report disclosed in April that Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, told the audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference that Obama “intends to destroy the Second Amendment” during his second term.

LaPierre said: "All of our Second Amendment liberty, all of the rights we've worked so hard to defend, all of what we know is good and right about America — all of it could be lost if Barack Obama is re-elected."

And he asserted that Obama has not pursued an anti-gun agenda during his first term because of a "political calculation" aimed at NRA supporters and gun owners who might oppose him in his re-election bid.

In its report, the Johns Hopkins Center, an arm of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said “there are enormous economic costs associated with gun violence in the U.S.,” claiming that firearm-related deaths and injuries resulted in medical and lost productivity expenses of about $32 billion in one recent year — as well as around 30,000 deaths and more than 335,000 injuries a year.

The Center’s "Case for Gun Policy Reforms in America" argues that the Second Amendment doesn't prevent lawmakers from strengthening gun laws that are already on the books, CNS News noted in an article about the Center’s report.

Among its recommendations:

Increase the number of “high-risk individuals” who are prohibited from possessing guns by extending the ban on firearms ownership to people convicted of misdemeanors involving violence, people who committed felonies as juveniles, and alcoholics and problem drinkers.
Raise the minimum age for buying a gun from 18 to 21.
Regulate gun sales between private individuals who are not licensed gun dealers. The Brady Law requires prospective buyers to pass a background check only if they are purchasing the gun from a licensed firearms dealer.
Boost regulation and oversight of gun sellers.
Eliminate so-called “right-to-carry” laws, which allow individuals who are not legally barred from possessing firearms to carry concealed weapons in public either by making it easy to get a permit to do so or by not requiring permits at all. The laws “do not make us safer and likely increase aggravated assaults,” the Center argues, rejecting research that shows just the opposite, CNS News observed.
Regulate the design of guns. "Not all firearms are created equal," the report states. “Aside from ammunition capacity, other characteristics of firearms that are relevant to public safety include how easily the gun can be concealed, and how prone it is to misfire or fire unintentionally.”
Reintroduce the now-expired 1994 ban on assault weapons and large capacity magazines.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has said he does not favor “new pieces of legislation” on guns – “or making certain guns illegal.”

President Obama has called for enforcing the laws already on the books and for reintroducing the ban on assault weapons.

Obama's strategy, according to the NRA’s LaPierre, is to "get re-elected and, with no more elections to worry about, get busy dismantling and destroying our firearm freedom — erase the Second Amendment from the Bill of Rights and excise it from the U.S. Constitution

Thanks again OG for another one of your informative posts. I am telling everyone I meet to BE SURE TO VOTE!!! even if the news and the polls say that Romney is way ahead. Don't believe it...make sure you vote. The Left will bus as many mindless voters as they can find to the voting booths by telling them anything and promising them everything. WE'VE GOT TO VOTE and make the message clear.

why would anyone re elect him esp after he signed the ndaa bill?? or romney for that matter he's just as big a corporate crown ass kisser as bomba

i'm writing in ron paul as i refuse to give my vote to an evil even a so called 'lessor one' as i feel neither romney or bama will do us any good at all and even though the election/selection is rigged i will be comfortable knowing i didn't sheepishly vote for either the media trumps up as 'good for our nation' i'm over their bs ..if the gov told the population they should head west i would be heading east lolz

Here is the problem, Obama has not been quiet about gun control in his first four years, in fact he has made it real clear what he wanted to do by going to the UN with announcing the Small Arms Treaty. Headlines U.N. Arms Trade Treaty Fails On U.S. Opposition After False NRA Gun Rights Threat. U.N. Arms Trade Treaty Fails On U.S. Opposition After False NRA Gun Rights Threat Another article after two of Operations Fast and Furious has came out this was a well thought out plan for two reasons (1) to continue to make Arizona look like they were selling guns illegally to anyone without a background check, and most likely would have worked until the Murder of Brian Terry was shot in the back with two of the assault weapons left at the scene were from Operation Fast and Furious (how convenient) (2) and this is what Obama really wanted, this is why he placed an executive order on the classified documents of Eric Holder. This was his greatest plan to ban all firearms throughout the US, by taking this to the UN and beginning the the UN Small Arms Treaty, this treaty is meant for all private citizens of the US banned from owning any firearms. Although, it would still take tow thirds of the Senate to pass this bill and this would never happen. Even though Democrats still hold the majority in the Senate. Known as "the U.N. small arms treaty," the measure would regulate private gun ownership, according to firearms rights watchdog groups. The problem is if this were ever to happen there would be an all out war in America, and as usual the Blue Helmet idiots would run and hide. Let me say say this, read your state's Constitution; Arizona to Secede from Union, if Martial Law is Declared! REFERENCE TITLE: abolish federal government; state sovereignty

State of Arizona
House of Representatives
Forty-fourth Legislature
Second Regular Session
2000

HCR 2034
Introduced by
Representatives Johnson, Cooley

Whereas, under Article V, Constitution of the United States, three-fourths of the states may abolish the federal government. In the alternative, if the states choose to exercise their inherent right as sovereigns, fewer than thirty-eight states may lawfully choose to ignore Article V, Constitution of the United States, and establish a new federal government for themselves by following the precedent established by Article VII, Constitution of the United States, in which nine of the existing thirteen states dissolved the existing Union under the Articles of Confederation and automatically superceded the Articles.

Lol.... Ron Paul brought home tax funded pork projects just like every other senator. He hooked you with his "listen to what i say, don't look at what i did“. But hey if you are ok with our taxes (Chinese money) paying to support the shrimp industry in his district then vote for Obama...... i mean Paul.

Again facts are ignored by those who want such laws to make themselves FEEL good. All one has to do is look at the states with the most restrictive gun laws and bans. Amazingly enough they are the EXACT same places with the high crime rates. However those places with little or no restrictions on what the individual can buy/own or carry have very little crime.

I'm referring to the last portion of your statement, only because most states that are very gun friendly, and are usually a tourist destination area do not report nationally their gun crimes. I can only speak for Arizona, and though we are down 15% lower than last year we still have our crime. Although I must say in all fairness that over 90% of our crimes are are done by illegal Mexicans, gangs and Mexicans legally here in Arizona, then we have a very small black population, but much larger than it use to be back in the sixties. Of course cannot forget about the whites either as they do commit crimes. Our crime happen daily 24/7, but the ones most hear about are the home invasions where the gangsters breaks into a house of a gun owner and he kills all four invaders with an AR 15, or my favorites two masked men try to rob a jewelery store, owner pulls his own gun and kills one and wounded the other. But I must say you are correct, in Arizona as no one really knows who is or is not carrying a firearm. Here is the list of the Top 100 with the highest crime rate Top 100 most dangerous places to live in the USA - NeighborhoodScout

First what is gun crime? Second the FACT remains that if you go look at the bradys site and compare there BEST ratings to the nation CRIME statistics by STATE not by county or town you can very easily see that the places brady says are the best also happen to be the ones with the highest murder rates. This has nothing to do with race. It is a simple matter of law abiding people and criminals. Those us us law abiding people obey the law we get a permit to carry we obey the stupid gun laws we buy tax stamps for out mg's and when we want to cut a rifle or shotgun barrel below a certain length as the law requires. The criminals rod, rape, kill and in general do not obey any laws so making laws about tools they use to commit these crimes has NO effect on THEM!
