Need some advice on a good carry gun for a woman

Just because a revolver is functionally "simpler" than a semi-auto, doesn't make it any more of a ladies gun than any other firearm. To assume that a lady must "love guns" before being able to cope with a mechanical safety, is silly. Personal preference is one thing, and gender bias is another. You don't have to love guns in order to carry one, but if you carry without being proficient with your chosen firearm, you're a fool....male or female.

The age-old "trade-off" in handguns is especially applicable to the ladies..... short barrel, light weight, only 5 or 6 rounds equals much more perceived recoil. REGARDLESS OF GENDER. That being said, anyone can learn to shoot any caliber, as well as learn to shoot either a revolver, or a semi-auto. If the safety is that much of an issue, consider a double action only semi auto..... same basic function (point and pull the trigger) but you get 4 more rounds..... Just sayin' ..... the Para Ordinance LDA series has a double-action trigger that is far superior to ANY out-of-the-box revolver.

Shoes...... when you buy 'em, you try 'em on first...... if they don't feel good, you don't buy 'em..... if they feel good, and you buy 'em, chances are that you still might need to break in the shoes, and your feet.

Buying a handgun simply because someone else has one is just foolish. If there were a "best" handgun, we'd all own it, and there wouldn't be the huge selection of handguns to choose from.

A 5 shot 3 in revolver sounds about right there are several on the market. It still has recoiil but will handle the +p rounds, Hope she dues not need it but training wikk definitly help.

Well the purpose of choosing a revolver was that she doesn't handle stress very well. I've known her personally for many years now and I feel that if faced with a jamb or misfire, she would not have the presence of mind to rack under pressure.

That's not to say that she couldn't teach herself the muscle memory to overcome that with practice, but we must remember that she may potentially have to use it before she gets a chance to.

Anyways, she ended up with Taurus 817 Ultra Lite .38 spl +P 2" blued 7 shot revolver. 21 oz and soft rubber grips. It fits her hand well and after a few shots and she stopped flinching, she actually became quite comfortable with it.

Hey Gang, I've carried a S&W .38 +P Airweight with Crimson grips for several years. Sometimes I will switch it up for a H&K P7 9mm if so inclined, best shooter ever. They both serve me well when carrying on my person or in a purse. The S&W definitely packs a punch but regular practice with both keeps me ready to use either one. I was trained: practice does not make perfer; perfect practice makes perfect.....
I encourage anyone coming through our CCW or Basic Pistol to ask around and try out their friends guns, unless they are without any defensive piece. Nothing beats the revolver as my old faithful. :biggrin:

If you do not mind paying the extra price you can get the 5 shot 357 and be able to use either 357 or 38's.

Check out the ruger sp101 357 mag, but i would hate to shoot it with out the hogue grips. I took my girl friend to the range and she couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a glock 17, but with the sp101 she was hitting dead center. I think it was the small grip and the heavy trigger pull that helped. You might check out a keltec 32 or a 380, but they also give a good kick with the small size. but the price and weight is good on the keltec. The bad thing about the ruger 357 mag is the weight, its like carrying a brick. You might look into the smith and wesson air weight revolvers, but they seem to carry a very high price. I would look into something stainless or alloy for concealed carry and stay away from blue finishes...they rust.
