Looking for help from anybody that has been successful in obtaining a CCW in San
Joaquin County Ca. Is it useless,or is there a way to make it happen?

California CCW

California has just been investigated on how they hand out their permits. They are now a "shall issue" State. If you are declined take them to court...

I lived in Southern Cali for over 37 years.
It's most likely not going to happen i.m.h.o.
Consider moving to another state.
That's what I did, and now I finally have mine. :)

I lived in Stockton for 30 years and one reason I left was the inability of average citizens to get concealed weapon permits. At times those in power seemed proud of their policy. Anyway if you want to proceed the odds are much greater of getting a permit IF you must carry lots of cash or valueables as part of your job. BUT there will probably be conditions on the permit stating where and when you may carry. You MUST take a class to qualify and I would do that first. Then find a person who you can talk to personally who has a carry permit to get a feel for the requirements the law enforcement agency may require. If you live in the unincorperated part of the county you must apply to the Sheriff. If you live in a city you have a choice, check to see if they(the police department) are issueung, or you can still try the Sheriff. Now IF you could move to neighboring Calaveras County it is practicly 'shall issue' with no or few restrictions, and the permit would still be good in San Joaquin County. I have been told the Sheriff of San Joaquin County ran for office saying he would grant more permits but then went back on his promise. Remember California is a 'may issue' state and most metropolitan law enforcement agencies rarely issue. Whatever you do, DONT apply and list the 2nd amendment as your reason, it will get you nowhere. Send me a PM letting me know how it went and good luck. You will need it.

If that was true it would be all over the news. California is NOT a 'shall issue' state. However some counties are to all intents 'shall issue'. Some counties are 'no issue'. Check with 'CALGUNS' to get the latest information. They have a website dedicated to California CCW and forums on a county by county basis.

That's the pipe dream. It just hasn't gotten there yet. There are a couple of lawsuits ongoing plus the new law about no OC (even though it was only unloaded). The unloaded OC was the excuse the courts found that you could bear arms and CC license wasn't needed. That has now changed and a lawsuit is moving forward. But nothing has been decided yet.

There is a new judgment. You can not be required to take a class first.

The reason why I said take the class first was that IF the OP was not as familiar with guns as he should be, a refresher CCW class would look better when starting the application process. It is true that while you are not required to take the class first, it does make you look more serious and definately more knowledgeable during the interview with the Sheriff's office. The class will teach you the applicable laws as well as range time. During the interview you MIGHT be asked a question about the law and having gone through the class you would be much better able to answer in a manner that makes you look better. Also it would show that you are a good shot if you are. When you apply for a carry permit in California you need as much help as possible. Been there and done that. Besides ALL of us could use some training once in awhile. I do wish the OP well and do want him to contact me with any news.

If you are going to take a class, you want to make sure it will meet the local's requirements unless you are super rich and don't mind taking a class and then have to take another class. I refused to take a class before I was approved for a CCW. They are quite expensive and took a lot of time. I had to enroll in the armed guard class when I got mine.

You absolutely should be familiar with the gun laws. The California Rifle and Pistol Association puts out a pamphlet with all the state gun laws with explanation. Every gun owner in Kalifornia should get it and study it every year. In fact every gun owner in Kalifornia should be a member. They keep you up with all the latest laws and proposed laws.

That map was made when the new Sheriff of San Joaquin County was running as a 'friend' of the 2nd Amendment. The FACTS are since he was elected there has NOT been an increase in CCW in the county and actually there is fewer permits issued as of 3-2012. San Joaquin County is actually a RED county which means its very hard to get a CCW from the Sheriff. This information was dated this year. Im not trying in any way to discourage mac50, bit it will almost take an act of God to get a CCW in San Joaquin County.
